Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA)

Founded in 1977, CASA is the official 501c3 domestic violence center based in Pinellas County, FL. We operate the area’s 24-hour hotline and emergency shelter; non-residential programs, such as support groups, economic empowerment and legal advocacy; Child Protective Investigative Team support; community and corporate training; and the CASA Peacemakers anti-bullying and healthy relationship school curriculum.

Position Title: Childhood Domestic Violence Advocate

Reports To: Family Justice Center Manager

Major Function: This is a specialized civilian professional position working in the St. Petersburg Police Department and Community Action Stops Abuse (CASA). The major function will be to provide support, resources, and referrals to children who witnessed domestic violence or are in danger due to domestic violence occurring in their home. The Childhood Domestic Violence Advocate will also work with the domestic violence victim in order to enhance the safety of the child.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Review applicable high lethality domestic violence reports with the goal of making contact with domestic violence victims and their child(ren) to assess needs and connect them with resources, counseling, shelter, and basic needs.
  • May assist with limited transportation to court, hearings, depositions and other related events.
  • Attend the following with the victim and/or child witness as needed: criminal court hearings, injunction hearings, investigations, depositions, etc.
  • Provides assistance with completing injunctions for protection.
  • Provides assistance with completing victim compensation applications.
  • Assists with the planning, coordination and developing related educational and informational materials.
  • Attend and participate in CASA staff meetings, required trainings, community meetings and presentations.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records or statistics.
  • Complete special projects requested by the supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with major course work in counseling, guidance, psychology, sociology, criminal justice or related field.
  • Must meet all St. Petersburg Police Department hiring qualifications.
  • Must successfully complete the St. Petersburg Police Department background check.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner, both written and oral.
  • Ability to remain calm and make objective decisions during extremely stressful situations.
  • Have the ability to function independently using judgement, ingenuity and initiative and work cooperatively as a team member.
  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence or other crisis experience preferred.
  • Previous law enforcement experience, especially related to victim assistance preferred.
  • Considerable knowledge of the Tampa Bay area social services system and the local criminal justice system.
  • Considerable knowledge and understanding of crisis counseling techniques, counseling program administration and criminal investigation techniques as they apply to victims of crimes.
  • Must exercise a high degree of professional discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information or records.
  • Willingness to drive agency vehicles, as needed.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida State Driver’s License and auto insurance.
  • Participate in all background screening requirements.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $41,000.00 - $49,500.00 per year
