WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Clinic Surgeon, Clinic Manager, Staff and Volunteers
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: This position is full-time or part-time. Candidates must be willing to occasionally cover shifts at other CAMP locations.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY: This position encompasses two key areas of responsibility: general veterinary assistant duties associated with a day of surgery at a high volume spay / neuter and/or community medicine clinic, and reception duties.

Job Description:
The job vet assistant includes many generalized veterinary assistant duties as well as very specific duties performed by only the vet assistant. This job is highly detail oriented as well as repetitive in nature. The vet assistant oversees and ensures the quality of care of each patient that passes through CAMP. The vet assistant will interact with the public on a daily basis as well as handling patients that come into the clinic while checking out patients and assisting with vaccine clinic patients. It is necessary in this position to be able to supervise, train and cross train staff members as well as volunteers. Additionally, it is essential to be able to speak knowledgeably to clients about responsible animal ownership as well as surgical procedures, vaccine protocols, other CAMP protocols and animal education issues. The assistant should have the ability to lift up to forty (40) pounds, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, and kneel. At all times, this position requires the assistant to provide quality service to clients, patients and staff and to represent CAMP. in a courteous and professional manner.
It is imperative as a CAMP employee that a positive and constructive attitude is always present while on shift with CAMP. Additionally, merit raises are based on taking initiative and generating ideas that will move CAMP toward achieving the organization’s vision, mission and goals.
General Vet assistant Duties:
- General Veterinary assistant Duties
- Collect animal from owner, tag and complete paperwork
- Release patients to clients and inform of post surgical care
- Answer questions from clients about surgical procedures and CAMP protocols
- When necessary, conduct pre-surgical exams assuring animals are able to undergo anesthesia safely
- Restrain animals for various procedures including blood draws, catheter placement and physical exam by veterinarian
- Administer subcutaneous injections
- Clean area at end of surgery
- Work with shelter animals and know shelter animal procedures
- Ability to lift and carry animals to and from all areas of the facility, including between front reception, prep, surgical and/or kennel areas
- Other duties as assigned
Specific Vet assistant Duties:
- Administer vaccinations, microchips, flea/tick/ear mite control while animal is recovering from anesthesia
- Perform nail trims and ear tipping on animals as required
- Run Felv/Fiv snap tests, record and report results
- Assist in caring for all equipment i.e. convective warmer, ultrasonic cleaner, microchip scanner etc
- Clean, sonicate, and lubricate all surgical instruments
- Assemble and sterilize surgical packs
- Clean endotracheal tubes
- Launder all surgical drapes and wraps
