Peer Recovery Supporter
Community Assessment & Treatment Services (CATS) promotes the social justice needs of the community by providing high-quality, cost-effective, evidence-based interventions that comprehensively address the chemical dependency and behavioral health needs of a diverse clientele.

CATS’ spectrum of programming includes residential treatment, day treatment, group and individual counseling, intensive (IOP) and non-intensive (OP) outpatient treatment, case management, drug testing, recovery housing, and peer support.

Position Description:
A Peer Recovery Supporter is a person who has lived experience with a mental health and/or substance use disorder, who is both actively engaged in their own recovery and who is in a position to engage in a supportive relationship with others who are embarking on their recovery journeys. Using their own experience as a template for action, a chief function of a PRS is to instill hope that recovery is achievable and to assist the person in discovering and directing their own unique path to recovery.

Under general supervision, responsibilities include working with clients on recovery plans; helping them identify their own strengths and feelings; identify and overcoming barriers; setting ambitious goals; problem-solving; create a Wellness Recovery Action Plan; establishing a crisis plan.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Meets clients where they are.
  • Provides clients with encouragement, conveys hope.
  • Models successful recovery principles to client through maintaining own recovery.
  • Has extensive knowledge of, and connects clients to, community resources.
  • Assists clients in identifying their personal interests, goals, strengths and weaknesses regarding recovery.
  • Assists clients and their families in accessing resources and information.
  • Identifies and makes linkages to community resources (communities of recovery, educational, vocational, social, cultural, spiritual, etc.) that support clients’ goals and interests.
  • Provides detailed, accurate, and timely documentation.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Develops relationships with community groups/agencies in partnership with others in the agency.
  • Collaborates with the client’s treatment team.
  • Provides and or arranges transportation when required.
  • Employs de-escalation and/or crisis intervention skills when necessary.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Other:
  • Self-identifies as a person in recovery from a substance use disorder (SUD) or a co-occurring disorder and is engaged in own program of recovery.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of the drug and alcohol treatment system and has a demonstrated commitment to the recovery community.
  • Is compassionate and empathic.
  • Adheres to policies and procedures as required of employees of CATS.
  • Adheres to Ohio Certified Peer Supporter Code of Ethics.
  • Communicates effectively with CATS management and staff.
  • Has basic computer skills and can demonstrate the ability to work within CATS’ Electronic Health Record.
  • Must have own vehicle and be willing to transport clients.

Minimum Education/Licensure:
  • High School Diploma/GED required; Associate Degree desired; Bachelor Degree preferred.
  • Lived experience and 2 years sobriety.
  • Must be certified as a Peer Recovery Supporter in the State of Ohio.
  • (2) letters of recommendation.
  • Valid OH Driver’s License, car insurance, and ability to qualify for CATS insurance.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and background checks.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification or ability to attain within 30 days of hire.
