An EMT-B determines the nature and extent of illness or injury of a patient. Administers basic medical care and first-aid health care treatments to and transports ill or injured persons to a medical facility, working as member of emergency medical team. The EMT is responsible for safely transporting patients, communicates important patient information to healthcare facilities medical personnel to ready staff and equipment to prepare for the patient’s arrival and obtain further treatment.  Removes or assists in removal of victims from scene of accident or catastrophe. May assist in controlling crowds, protecting valuables, or performing other duties at scene of catastrophe. May assist professional medical personnel in emergency treatment administered at medical facility. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Perform the duties of an Emergency Medical Technician in a safe, dignified, and compassionate manner including but not limited to:

  • Follow regulations, laws, and standards in accordance with Ohio State EMS, Fire, and Transport and Community Care Ambulance policies, rules, and guidelines.
  • Understand location, how to access, and follow hospital protocols.
  • Understand CCAN Policies and Procedures,
  • Respond to emergent and non-emergent transport requests calmly, efficiently, and promptly.
  • Administer Basic Life Support (BLS) to patients at the scene, en-route to a hospital, in a pre-hospital care setting, and in conjunction with medical protocols and the CCAN Medical Directors.
  • Assess the nature and extent of an injury or illness to establish and prioritize medical procedures.
  • Promote and perform effective and respectful communications with other medical professionals to obtain instructions for further treatment.
  • Maintain order including safety considerations, crowd disturbances, and restraint of family and friends.
  • Safe driving of emergency vehicles adhering to traffic laws, Ohio State EMT, rules and regulations, and CCAN policies.
  • Always support a Just Culture of Safety and in all aspects of the role.
  • Support an Integrated Safety Management System and a Safety-First philosophy
  • Maintain continual competency of safety and clinical knowledge and skills.
  • Complete patient care records, insurance forms, evaluation forms, and all required forms in a competent, legible and timely fashion before the end of their shift.  These should be completed objectively with facts not subjective opinion.
  • Adhere to and follow policies and procedures concerning safety and contamination by blood-borne pathogens and Infection Control including CCAN, UH, CC and HAZMAT.
  • Educate and train EMS personnel, EMS trainees, and the public in a manner that encourages positivity, safety, and competence.
  • Attend mandatory monthly education and training sessions and Annual Skills Day.
  • Medical Director educational offerings are highly encouraged to attend.
  • Follow Quality Assurance plans for chart completion, documentation, Medical Director Review, and Quality Improvement Plans.  Report charts requiring or chosen for Medical Director Review to the Leader-On-Call (LOC).
  • Follow and participate in Safety Systems, goals, safety process improvement, and safety event review needs.
  • Ensure professional use of approved EMS radio language during radio conversations. 
  • Promptly respond to instructions from a dispatcher safely driving and operating specially equipped emergency vehicles to specified locations at a safe a controlled speed and in accordance with Ohio Ambulance rules, and regulations, and in accordance with Ohio State law and Paramedic certification/licensure.
  • Assure that vehicles are always in good working conditions reporting issues early to ensure high quality maintenance and safety.  These vehicles should be properly maintained and always locked.  This includes vehicle equipment checks being up-to-date, ambulance stock checked daily, and ambulance bags checked every shift.  The equipment should be disinfected, well-stocked and in good working order always.
  • Disinfect, clean, organize, and restock to always ensure a ready state.
  • Maintain appropriate equipment, stock, bag, and medication checklists
  • Complete appropriate patient documentation before the end of the shift.
  • Maintain annual continuing medical education credits set forth by the Ohio State EMS Office
  • Following all guidelines and policies regarding the use of Narcotics.

Qualifications


Education and/or Experience –

  • Current Ohio State EMT, AEMT or NREMT certification
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Valid Ohio State Driver’s license and be able to meet CCA’s Insurability requirements
  • State of Ohio Personal Vehicle Insurance
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC)
  • 18 Years of age or older
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must maintain all certifications and licenses required for this position throughout employment
