Instructional Specialist II, Commercial Vehicle Training

Prepare, coordinate, teach, and evaluate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) students and courses.


High school diploma/GED required, Associate’s degree preferred. Five years’ experience driving vehicles requiring a CDL-A license, two years’ CDL instructional experience, two years’ CDL Employer Tester status with the Maryland MVA, and one year of supervisory or mentoring experience required. A current, valid Maryland Commercial Driver’s License - Class A (CDL-A), with Air Brake certification, plus X (Hazmat/Tanker), and T (Doubles/Triples) endorsements, are required; S (School Bus), P (Passenger), or All endorsements are preferred. Must be able to pass a USDOT Physical examination as required to maintain a valid Commercial Driver’s License. Knowledge of and experience with CDL industry driver logbook software preferred.


Compensation within the posted range is determined by a candidate's education level and/or years of experience in the field.  Generally, employees are hired in the lower third of the scale.

  1. Seek continuous improvement in teaching (classroom and on-line) methodology and student-centered learning.
  2. Maintain relevant licensure and status with key Commercial Vehicle Training agencies, and remain current in the operation of CDL vehicles and the commercial transportation industry.
  3. Maintain scheduled availability to students.
  4. Develop an individual professional development plan.
  5. Participate with other faculty in developing, managing courses, and curricula in Continuing Education.
  6. Provide leadership to assigned Continuing Education division, including daily supervision of assigned staff and adjunct instructors, and assist in student recruitment and selection.
  7. Maintain laboratories, supplies and/or equipment.
  8. Remain knowledgeable about the College, its structure, culture, policies, practices, andtheCDL Training program.
  9. Serve as the point of contact for key Commercial Vehicle Training agencies.
  10. Attend regular meetings, as appropriate.
Serve as an advocate for the College and its students, as required.


  1. Coordinate, develop, and update curriculum that meets standards for learning the safe operation of both Class A and Class B commercial vehicles.
  2. Teach assigned courses utilizing strategies and activities to promote student engagement and enhanced student learning at a variety of locations including classroom, driving range, and on roads and highways.
  3. Follow established rules and guidelines of the FMCSA, USDOT, Maryland MVA and the college.
  4. Maintain a valid Maryland CDL-A with X and T endorsements and, preferably, S and P endorsements.
  5. Maintain Employer Tester status with the Maryland MVA.
  6. Maintain industry affiliations and develop new affiliations for student placement.
  7. Coordinate and monitor staff scheduling for courses and testing, and processes for compliance and course paperwork.
  8. Perform administrative duties that may include instructor mentoring or similar functions.
  9. Assist in directing and supervision of Instructional Specialist I and administrative support personnel.
  10. Participate in other administrative duties as required. 
  11. Manage the identification and scheduling of maintenance for the program’s class A and B vehicles to ensure availability.
