GENERAL SUMMARY
This position works collaboratively with mathematics and information technology faculty in a diverse, urban setting and reports directly to the Chairs of Mathematics. Effective interpersonal, leadership, and organizational skills are essential. CCD seeks faculty with strong teaching skills to engage its diverse students using an array of instructional methods and tools (e.g. project-based learning, flipped classroom, innovative use of technology, implementation of open educational resources, etc.). The college encourages creativity and supports faculty to implement cutting-edge methods to improve student learning. CCD's rigorous learning environment fosters a community of lifelong learners who demonstrate critical thinking, cultural competence, and ethical responsibility.

PRIMARY DUTIES
The primary duty for this position is teaching across departments as needed, and a full course load equals 18 work units (equivalent to 15 lecture credits) per semester. However, faculty must demonstrate commitment to student success beyond the classroom and devote some of their professional time to service activities in the college as a component of shared governance. This is a 9-month position with the option of summer teaching loads. All summer assignments will be paid in addition to the posted salary.
The successful candidate will work collaboratively with mathematics and information technology faculty to:
Teaching-Related:
- Deliver content and facilitate student learning of assigned courses in a dynamic environment that engages students
- Design and update class websites on the college’s learning management system with the assistance of the department’s course captains
- Evaluate student mastery of course content by conducting regular assessments and providing timely feedback
- Maintain accurate student records
- Be available outside of the classroom for student meetings
- Utilize retention strategies to maximize student success
- Engage in department, pathway, and college responsibilities and initiatives, including efforts to maintain departmental coherence across CCD’s many instructional venues (i.e. on campus, online asynchronously or synchronously, hybrid, hyflex, and/or concurrent enrollment)
Service-Related:
- Attend department, pathway, college, and system-wide meetings
- Serve on department, pathway, college, and system-wide committees
- Participate in required professional development
- Contribute to the professional development of adjunct instructors (e.g. hiring, mentoring, observing in classrooms, etc.)
- Assist the college in developing data science courses
- Assist the college in creating an Associate’s degree in data science
- Assist the college in creating memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with four-year institutions for students to earn a Bachelor’s degree in data science after transfer
- Assist the college in exploring the possibility of concurrent enrollment courses in data science so that high school students can have more options for dual credit
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Education:(Minimum/Required)
Master’s degree in data science, statistics, or computer science or any related field such as actuarial science, computer information systems, economics, engineering, informatics, information technology, mathematics, mathematics education, operational research, or physics with a combination of 18 graduate credits in data science, statistics, and/or computer science.
Also Allowed:
Candidates can also meet the minimum education qualification through tested professional experience by having a bachelor’s degree in any field and showcasing at least 4000 hours within the last 7 years of substantial work and ongoing engagement in data science, statistics, or computer science. This experience can be evidenced through expertise gained from a combination of various activities, including advanced data science-related certification, professional consultation, research, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, curriculum development, teaching, or training.
Experience: (required/minimum)
- One (1) year of teaching experience in a high school, community college, four-year college, or university setting
- Experience with statistical analysis packages and programming languages like R, SAS, Python, Juptyr, etc.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (required/minimum)
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
- Ability to work with Microsoft Office products (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, SharePoint, etc.)
- Ability to use various web conferencing platforms (e.g. Teams, Zoom, Webex, etc.)
Education: (preferred)
Ph.D. in data science, statistics, or computer science OR Ph.D. in a related field with a combination of 18 graduate credits in data science, statistics, and/or computer science
Experience: (preferred)
- Experience implementing current pedagogy for community college data science
- Experience with developing new curricula
- Experience with educational innovation
- Experience teaching in a diverse, urban setting
- Experience with first-time, first-generation college students
- Experience with non-traditional college students
- Experience with teaching practices informed to address diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Experience teaching online
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: (preferred)
- Ability to work with Desire2Learn, Banner, and EAB Navigate
- Fluency in Spanish
