Job Summary
The Division of Workforce Partnerships is seeking an experienced utilities professional to serve as an Instructor – Utilities to teach a curriculum focusing on foundational and applied topics within the utility industry. The instructor will prepare students for entry-level roles, provide practical hands-on training, and inspire career exploration within utilities. This role responds to growing employer demand and may include day, evening, and/or weekend hours.

- Entry-level utility roles (e.g., MSR, Saw Cutter, laborers, CSA)
- Basic electric generation and voltage concepts
- Introduction to gas systems
- Hands-on activities (e.g., meter reading, turning on and off)
- Smart grid technology
- Energy efficiency and renewable energy
Duties and Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively in a diverse, inclusive, and student-centered environment, with students of various learning styles, cultures, identities, and life experiences.
- Ability to work with Director and employer partner to create and contextualize curriculum.
- Create a positive teaching and learning environment, utilizing a combination of lecture and applied learning via hands-on activities. Deliver content using a variety of methods to meet the needs of individual learners.
- Communicate class content utilizing a variety of teaching methods so that learning occurs, skills are developed, and students are motivated to learn and achieve their educational and employment objectives.
- Deliver effective lesson plans and provide supplemental material to achieve course objectives and address student needs.
- Integrate technology and active learning strategies to enhance instruction.
- Keep detailed and organized records of students’ attendance.
- Work creatively in all classes taught to discourage student withdrawal and maintain satisfactory retention.
- Understand the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and adhere to CCRI’s policies and procedures for responding to student requests for accommodations.
- Assist in keeping organized records of students’ attendance, assessments, and progress, including a final evaluation.
- Work with workforce staff to develop/contextualize outlines, lesson plans and learning assessments.
- Stay informed about trends in the utility industry to ensure relevant and up-to-date curriculum delivery.
- Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials, including supplementary materials for lecture and lab-based activities as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the program coordinators and other instructors in the training and attend meetings as needed.
- Demonstrate a commitment to professional development.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Experience in the utility industry or related field for a minimum of 5 years
- Stay informed about trends in the utility industry to ensure relevant and up-to-date curriculum delivery.
- Experience in either traditional instruction, peer training, or on-the-job mentoring
- Highly proficient in the use of technology, including Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, primarily), email, and the internet for instruction and program purposes
- Intermediate digital communication technology skills (presentation tools, online meetings, etc.)
- Commitment to broadening the talent pool of utility professionals
- Experience with classroom/team management
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Creativity and flexibility in the classroom are expected
Competencies
- 10 years’ experience in an apprenticeship trade
- Associate degree or higher
- Experience teaching in adult education settings
- Experience in the trades
- Experience working with a diverse student population
- Knowledge of successful strategies for classroom management
- Teaching experience in similar post-secondary programs
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning theory, life skills and college and career readiness curricula for adult populations
