What are the responsibilities and job description for the Consumer Loan Underwriter I position at COMMUNITY FIRST CREDIT UNION OF FLORIDA?
Role:
Responsible for reviewing and underwriting credit applications from members for direct consumer loans and lines and credit. These applications will be received through our website, from our branches and through loan-by-phone. The position performs a thorough analysis of all qualifying criteria including: income, credit, assets and collateral, while adhering to regulatory guidelines and internal policies and procedures.
This entry-level underwriting position will receive hands-on training as well as access to on-line courses, webinars and external workshops. This position requires a working knowledge of regulatory guidelines pertaining to lending and Fair Credit practices, as well as Bank Secrecy and OFAC.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Monitors loan queues. Reviews consumer loan requests including auto, recreational vehicle, personal loans and credit cards in accordance with credit union guidelines and policies. Analyzes credit worthiness including character, capacity, collateral, capital and conditions. Documents loan decision and required provisions necessary to complete the loan. Approve loans within limits of authority, and insure loan requests are properly documented.
Work closely with interviewer as needed to ensure that loan decisions are in the best interest of the member and the credit union. Requests any additional information needed to ensure the best decision. Determine if loans fit into guidelines for specific product and if not recommend alternative product. Ability to maintain working relationship in and outside immediate department.
Demonstrate thorough knowledge of consumer loan products, policies and procedures.
Be highly engaged in learning underwriting fundamentals, receiving hand-on training, as well as seeking out and engaging outside classes and webinars or on-line courses.
Must comply with applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, the Patriot Act, and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.
Knowledge and Skills:
Experience
1-3 years of Consumer Lending experience. Proficient reading, writing, grammar and mathematics skills. Strong interpersonal relations and communication skills.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
High school degree or GED; associate degree a plus
Interpersonal Skills
Courtesy and tact are essential elements of the job. Work involves personal contact with customers and others inside and outside the organization, generally regarding fairly routine matters for the purposes of giving and obtaining information or instructions, updating or referring. Communications generally require shorter and not in-depth discussions.

Physical Requirements
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
Working Conditions
Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with minimal noise.
