  • Position Title: Prepared Foods Assistant Manager, Back of House (BoH)
  • Reports To: Prepared Foods Department Manager
  • Status: Full-Time, Non-Exempt, Will be required to work some AM and PM shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Pay Range: $21.22 to $24.32

Position Summary: The Back of House (BoH) Assistant Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth kitchen operations and maintaining high food quality and safety standards in the Prepared Foods Department. This position focuses on leading and training kitchen staff, ensuring adherence to Co-op food preparation standards, and supporting a clean, organized, and efficient work environment. The BoH Assistant Manager will oversee daily BoH operations, including food production, safety compliance, and kitchen workflow. Additionally, this individual will support the Prepared Foods Manager and FoH Assistant Manager in fostering a team-oriented atmosphere and ensuring the highest levels of cleanliness, efficiency, and food quality.

Key Responsibilities:

Team Supervision and Kitchen Operations:

  • Lead and supervise the BoH staff to ensure efficient and high-quality food preparation.
  • Act as a point of contact for kitchen staff, addressing concerns, questions, or operational challenges promptly and professionally.
  • Foster a team-oriented atmosphere, encouraging communication and collaboration across departments to ensure smooth service.
  • Model proper food preparation techniques and kitchen best practices, coaching team members as needed.
  • Support and guide staff in day-to-day kitchen operations, including providing direction on workflow and troubleshooting issues.

Staff Training and Development:

  • Assist in the development and implementation of BoH training programs, ensuring staff is well-trained in food preparation techniques, safety standards, and efficiency practices.
  • Provide ongoing training, feedback, and support to BoH team members, helping them grow professionally.
  • Ensure all BoH staff maintain up-to-date Food Worker Cards and meet food safety training requirements.
  • Conduct performance evaluations in collaboration with the Prepared Foods Manager, identifying areas for improvement and offering developmental support.

Kitchen Efficiency and Organization:

  • Oversee smooth and efficient operations in the kitchen, including food prep, cooking, plating, and order accuracy.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment, troubleshooting minor issues and coordinating repairs when necessary.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of all kitchen work areas, following food safety and sanitation guidelines.
  • Monitor inventory levels of ingredients and supplies, working with the Prepared Foods Manager to ensure proper stock levels and timely ordering.
  • Assist in minimizing food waste through proper portioning, storage, and inventory tracking.

Collaboration with Front of House and Other Teams:

  • Work closely with the Front of House (FoH) team to ensure seamless communication and coordination between FoH and BoH.
  • Collaborate with other department managers and the Prepared Foods Manager to align kitchen operations with organizational goals.

Health and Safety Compliance:

  • Ensure that all BoH staff follow health, safety, and sanitation regulations, including food safety standards.
  • Oversee the daily cleaning and sanitizing routines of BoH spaces, ensuring adherence to health department guidelines.
  • Monitor and enforce safety practices to ensure a safe working environment for all team members.
  • Maintain and enforce proper labeling, storage, and food-handling procedures to ensure compliance with food safety regulations.

Inventory and Cost Control:

  • Assist in managing BOH inventory, tracking product usage, and helping to minimize waste.
  • Work with the Prepared Foods Manager to monitor and control kitchen expenses, including food costs and labor.
  • Participate in inventory audits and assist in ordering and receiving supplies.

Scheduling and Labor Management:

  • Assist with scheduling of BoH team members, ensuring optimal staffing levels to meet operational needs while staying within budgetary constraints.
  • Track employee time and attendance, ensuring accurate reporting for payroll purposes.
Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a kitchen or food service environment, and ideally at least 1 year in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide, motivate, and develop a team.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple departments, including FoH, Bakery, and other Prepared Foods locations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn scheduling and timekeeping software (e.g., Paylocity).
  • Knowledge of food safety and sanitation regulations, with a commitment to maintaining compliance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on teamwork and efficiency.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure kitchen environment while maintaining professionalism.
  • Willingness to lead with care and compassion, supporting the well-being and development of team members.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours per shift) and perform tasks while standing.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, and reaching to access equipment, supplies, and products.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting of objects weighing less than 25 pounds.
  • Ability to use fine motor skills for tasks such as food preparation, cutting, and operating kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to work in a hot, fast-paced kitchen environment.

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  • Exposure to varying temperatures in kitchen and food preparation areas.
  • Noise and activity associated with a busy kitchen environment.
