POSITION TITLE:
Medical Assistant I
POSITION SUMMARY:
As a member of the primary care team in the nursing department, the Medical Assistant I (MA I) provides support for patients, medical providers, nurses, and MAs as well as general support for other clinic functions. The desired candidate has a pleasant and welcoming personality and is willing to learn new skills. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in providing care for a unique panel of patients shared with an assigned primary care team.
- Performs routine CLIA-waived lab testing, as directed by the primary care provider (PCP) and clinic protocols.
- Assists with the collection of lab samples.
- Acts as a chaperone for medical exams when requested.
- Prepares exam rooms for patient visits. Restocks and cleans rooms as needed.
- Places phone calls to patients under the direction of the PCP as well as answering phone calls with non-triage related calls.
- Assists with pre-visit planning activities for the assigned patient panel including reviewing patient charts for health screenings due.
- Requests records and updates (populates) patient charts with prior medical records as needed.
- Understands and maintains standard precautions in all clinical activities, uses PPE appropriately.
- Coordinates in-clinic services between providers, the lab, MAs, and nurses, to assist with timely patient flow.
- Demonstrates teamwork and works to build cohesive, professional relationships with all CHCFC staff and patients.
- Maintains current CPR certification.
- Assists in emergencies as trained, calls for outside help as directed.
Participates in quality improvement and quality assurance activities, maintains equipment in working order and cleanliness of clinic.
- Orders lab supplies when needed.
- Maintains equipment in good working order and notifies supervisor of broken equipment.
- Informs person responsible for ordering supplies when stock is below PAR level.
- Assists in weekly inventory, restocks, and rotations of stock to prevent expired stock/shortages.
- Participates in PDSA cycles.
Provide phone and clerical support for general patient inquiries and tasks.
- Completes and faxes forms including but not limited to school physical, prior authorizations, DME orders, school and work excuse letters, and other state forms.
- Assists with medication refills under the direction and supervision of the prescribing provider.
- Assist with scheduling appointments for follow up care.
- Obtains medical records as needed.
- Clearly documents all phone calls, interactions with patients, and attempts to contact patients in a timely manner.
- Coordinates care as directed via phone, patient portal, and/or letters.
- Responds to tasks from team members in a timely manner.
Attends and actively participates in health center medical team meetings and other staff meetings as required.
Fills in for PTO and call outs as needed.
Effectively communicates with patients and staff across departments.
REQUIRED SKILLS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Proficiency in written and spoken English.
Experience: Primary care office-based experience preferred.
Skills:
- Exceptionally organized
- Ability to work harmoniously with ethnically, culturally, racially, and gender diverse staff and patients.
- Ability to efficiently operate basic office equipment (multi-line phone, fax, photocopier)
- Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and Internet.
- Basic understanding of medical terminology.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
While performing the required duties of this job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent when traveling between Health Center locations where medical care is provided. This position performs tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
