Description
The Mental Health Therapist (Substance Abuse) provides mental health and substance use counseling and support to patients suffering from drug or alcohol dependency referred by internal primary care providers as well as external sources. The successful candidate will engage in a clinical team approach addressing co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions; provide training and education to patients and families regarding substance use disorders and mental health conditions; and make referrals to appropriate sources for continued care of patients.
Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Meet with clients to obtain personal information and medical history and consults with other professionals as required to get a clear picture of the patient's status and extent of problems.

Determine causal relationship between substance addiction, socio-economic factors and personality traits.

Design a program of treatment and rehabilitation tailored to patient's individual situation based on knowledge of alcohol and drug dependency and counseling and treatment methods.

Enter case history and progress notes within the three-day encounter sign-on period. Modifies treatment program as appropriate based on observation.

Meet with family members to educate them on the most helpful role they can play in the recovery process.

Actively participate in performance improvement activities, including the evaluation of counseling methods for the effective treatment of substance abuse related problems.

Assist with creating and/or obtaining marketing and educational materials on substance use disorders/mental health conditions and market organization services.

Research and utilize industry best practices and analyze organization services to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Participate in the organization’s referral process by accepting patients or making referrals for patients who may need other services (e.g., medical, dental, vision, psychiatric).

Works collaboratively with organization providers to coordinate services in an effort to improve patients’ overall health, while ensuring adequate and timely communication with all providers and support staff.
Qualifications
Education: Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, Educational Psychology, or related field.
Licensure: Current license to practice as Licensed Professional Counselor or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Texas.
Experience: Three years’ experience in mental health and substance use services preferred. Experience in clinical team approach to treatment of mental health and substance use conditions.
Expertise: Substance use disorders.
Language: English; bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
Travel: May require travel from one site to another; valid Texas drivers’ license and current auto insurance required; must have reliable and safe transportation.
Hours of Work: 8am-5pm M-F with some weekend/evening work. Hours may vary based on needs.
