POSITION SUMMARY:
Under immediate supervision of professional dental staff, performs para-professional dental work, receptionist functions, and dental radiography including:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES
As Dental Assistant Trainee:
1. Obtain Dental Assistant Trainee status from Iowa Dental Board.
2. Completes in-office training assignments pertaining to on-the-job training.
3. Successfully complete exams and processes to become a Registered Dental Assistant within the required time frame as set forth by the Iowa Dental Board.
As Registered Dental Assistant
1. Clean, package/wrap and sterilize dental instruments and equipment while following sterilization and safety guidelines.
2. Greet, seat and prepare patients for treatment.
3. Prepares instruments and supplies; assists dentist in operatory.
4. Make a variety of dental radiographs, including periapicals, bitewings, full mouth surveys and panoramic films.
5. Scan images into the dental software and place them in the correct templates.
6. Instruct patients in simple oral hygiene, nutrition counseling and if necessary, tobacco cessation.
7. Dismisses patients at the end of procedure.
8. Document procedural notes in electronic records for every visit.
9. Verify patient name, date of birth, medications and allergies of all patients at every visit.
10. Check blood pressure on patients prior to extractions, on all new adult patients and at periodic recalls.
11. Maintains lab, operatory and sterilization room as needed and time permits.
12. Obtain and/or maintain current CPR certification.
13. Obtain and/or maintain current X-ray certification.
Sterilization:
1. Maintains autoclaves, ultrasonic, compressor and vacuum (suction).
2. Answers phones, takes messages, and relays information.
3. Stocks supplies in sterilization and each operatory, as needed.
4. Performs all duties of dental assistant, as needed.
5. Obtain and /or maintain current OSHA and Infection Control certification.
Clerical Duties:
1. Assist front desk staff in greeting patients, if needed.
2. Fax referral letters, school screenings and other dental documentation.
3. Provide cost estimates to patients for treatment, as needed.
4. Help maintain dental waiting list, Department of Human Services (DHS) watch list and referral list.

5. Follows established policies and procedures for safety, infection and exposure control.
6. Performs other duties, as assigned.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Registered Dental Assistant: Graduate of an accredited dental assisting program approved by the Iowa Dental Board; verifiable attendance at a four-hour State Board-approved radiation seminar, with certificate to operate dental X-ray equipment. Registered Dental Assistant by Iowa Dental Board (RDA or QDA).
OR Dental Assistant Trainee: High School graduate or equivalent with active Dental Assistant Trainee status by Iowa Dental Board with attainment of Iowa RDA within 12 months (including completion of course of study in infection control, hazardous materials, and complete the Iowa Dental Board's jurisprudence testing).
