Under the general supervision of the Director of Nursing and the Urgent Care Manager, the Urgent Care Medical Assistant Team Lead is a resource to the other Medical Assistants and provides assistance to the patients, providers, and clinical support staff peers to manage the flow of the clinic. The UC Medical Assistant Team Lead is responsible for assisting in the training of new staff, on-going performance improvement activities under the guidance of the Manager coordination of daily job activities, maintaining the computerized logging system of telephone messages, critical labs, and other incoming patient related correspondence that requires nurse and/or provider intervention. The UC Medical Assistant Team Lead is expected to share their knowledge with the other members of the staff.

Essential Duties And Major Responsibilities

  • Assists in the training of new Medical Assistants Assists in the coordination of daily job activities and day-to-day supervision of the Medical Assistants Serves as the supervisor and mentor for Medical Assistant students assigned to the department Assists in making sure Medical Assistants are up to date on all trainings and competencies
  • Helps to manage the flow of the clinic by ensuring staff room and manage patients in an efficient, and timely manner.
  • Identifies potential system improvements
  • Assists in examinations by preparing the patient, the equipment, and supplies, and assisting the provider as needed
  • Performs ear lavages
  • Prepare documentation for pre-employment, sports physicals and camp physicals
  • Assists with front desk coverage when needed.
  • Works cooperatively with the Manager to design, test, and implement performance improvement projects
  • Works cooperatively with the Manager to consistently provide a high level of customer service from the MA staff
  • Responsible for ensuring crash carts and logs are up to date/in range.
  • Quality control testing on all point of care testing.
  • Autoclaving surgical instruments.
  • Cross trains Medical Assistants in family medicine.
  • Screens incoming patient related correspondence (i.e. telephone messages, lab reports, consultant reports) and prioritizes routing to nursing and/or providers for appropriate action to be taken
  • Maintains computerized logging system of patient related correspondence (i.e. telephone messages, lab reports, consultant reports) and provides follow-up for items not receiving action in a timely manner
  • Works collaboratively with nurses and providers to assist in providing information to patients and/or consultant providers (i.e. correspondence to patients, office notes to consultant providers)
  • Works collaboratively with telephone reception staff to improve the quality of messages and clarify patient concerns and questions
  • Provide coverage to assist in answering incoming phone calls if nursing staff need assistance
  • Prepares/rooms patients for visits with providers by performing and recording vital signs (including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respirations, weight, and other procedures as needed)
  • Assists in preparing patients for routine diagnostic procedures (i.e. urine specimens) and performing selected screening tests (including urine dipsticks, urine hCG, and POCT testing)
  • Restocks inventory of all exam rooms, cabinets, and carts.
  • Orders medical/lab supplies, and medical equipment as needed. Unpackage and restock all deliveries.
  • Work is of medium demand, walking and standing.
  • Occasional lifting of patients with assistance, reaching, handling and fingering of instruments and equipment and caring of patient needs.
  • Able to lift 40 lbs.
  • Hearing to distinguish difference in heartbeat and breathing of patients and to hear instructions.
  • Near visual acuity to read gauges and dials on equipment.
  • Color vision for perceiving changes in patient's skin color or color of solutions.
  • Managing patient care is a team effort that involves clinical and non-clinical staff interacting with patients.
  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment of the health center mission
  • Demonstrate understanding and commitment to the established CHC Values and Standards
  • Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required, Associate Degree in Medical Office Assistant or equivalent preferred
  • Five years' experience as Medical Assistant, preferably in a Community Health Center or Urgent Care environment
  • Bilingual in Spanish and/or Portuguese preferred
  • Computer skills for accurate data entry
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology
  • AHA BLS Health Care Provider certification or equivalent
  • Demonstrated interpersonal relationship skills
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced medical office environment
