WHAT DO WE DO?
CHSI is a private, non-profit organization established in 1973 to serve the health needs of migrant & seasonal farm workers and their family members. Today, CHSI has expanded services and provides mental & physical healthcare to all individuals in our communities. Our services are provided on a more affordable sliding fee scale to those who are under-insured or un-insured. We also accept ND and MN Medicaid, Medicare, and most private insurance plans. We currently operate four nurse-managed clinics, two mobile medical units, and two victim advocacy program centers in Minnesota & North Dakota.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are searching for a full-time Controller to join our Willmar, MN team. In a controller role at CHSI, we are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations. The Controller will play a pivotal role in managing financial reporting, ensuring compliance, and driving strategic decision-making. This position requires a strong background in accounting, leadership, and a proactive approach to improving financial processes.
In addition to ensuring the accuracy of reports for administration and our Board of Directors, you would be accountable for:
- Financial Leadership: Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop and manage budgets, financial forecasts, and variance analysis.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations and internal policies.
- Internal Controls: Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure financial integrity.
- Audit & Tax: Coordinate external audits and liaise with tax advisors to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Team Leadership: Manage and mentor the accounting team, fostering professional growth and operational excellence.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to streamline and enhance financial processes and systems.
- Strategic Collaboration: Partner with executive leadership to provide financial insights and contribute to strategic planning.
- Financial Operation: Working with the Board of Directors and/or its committees on financial matters, including the preparation of monthly financial reports and accompanying analyses. Also, ensuring financial operations meet all program requirements set forth by HRSA and other regulatory agencies.
ARE YOU A GOOD FIT?

PHYSICAL ABILITIES
- Ability to bend and crouch occasionally, sit continuously, and stand or walk frequently.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to use hands/arms, feet/legs for repetitive fine to large motor skill movements.
EDUCATION & SKILLS
- Bachelor's degree in accounting with CPA or master's degree in accounting from an accredited college or university.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in accounting activities, at least 5 of which involve non-profit accounting.
- An essential range of knowledge including health care reimbursement funding, state and federal regulations and cost principles, grants management, budgeting and planning, reporting, problem-solving, and communication.
- Previous experience in a supervisory role.
- Valid driver's license, reliable transportation and auto insurance.
- Ability to work with diverse and multicultural populations.
- Ability to work independently and with limited supervision.
