Essential Duties And Responsibilities
- Instructional Leadership
- Supervise and evaluate department staff, providing constructive feedback and support for professional growth
- Coordinate the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum and instructional programs
- Ensure alignment of department curriculum with national, state standards and district goals
- Facilitate the integration of technology in instruction and assessment
- Research subject area trends and innovative programs, evaluate curriculum, and make recommendations to the Executive Director
- Review of teacher lesson plans and assist in writing and implementation
- Assist with the development and implementation of assessments for the department
- Assist in ensuring the written curriculum is the taught curriculum as well as the assessed curriculum
- Explore dual credit opportunities for students
- Lead all relevant Institute Days, Resource Hours and PLPs focused on high quality instructional leadership.
- Department Management
- Manage department budget (with the Executive Director of Humanities), including allocation of resources and equipment
- Work with the Associate Principal and Executive Director of Humanities and make recommendations on scheduling of classes and staff assignments
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports as required
- Coordinate textbook and instructional materials selection and distribution: this includes but is not limited to supporting the uploading of information for PE/Drivers Ed/C.W. technology apps and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with State and Federal laws
- Assist with resolving student placement concerns (level changes, freshman placement, etc.)
- Assist in resolving any departmental issues that arise (consult with the Assistant Principal of Teaching and Learning if needed)
- Review department grade books (inspection, guidance, assistance)
- Participate in summer curriculum writing work and summer department planning (not to exceed 5 days)
- Create, support and manage safety and supervision measurements for PE/Drivers Ed/C.W. This includes but is not limited to pool supervision, locker room, supervision, and other equipment used in PE/Drivers Ed/C.W.
- Create, support and manage certifications needed by PE/Drivers Ed/C.W. teachers. This can include but is not limited to CPR, climbing equipment, and water safety.
- Work to create, support and manage a PE/Drivers Ed/C.W. inventory system.
- Support staffing of D/E Summer School.
- Professional Development
- Plan and facilitate department meetings and professional development activities
- Encourage and support staff participation in workshops, conferences, and training programs as appropriate
- Stay current with best practices and research in physical education, health, and drivers education
- Assist with planning and implementing Institute days, School Improvement Plan days, Remote Hybrid days, and Professional Development
- Communication and Collaboration
- Serve as a liaison between department staff and school administration
- Collaborate with other department chairs and school leaders to ensure program coherence
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and community members
- Participate in school-wide committees and initiatives as needed
- Participate in screening and interviews of new staff (as needed)
- Assist with new teacher induction and mentoring
- Attend monthly DC meetings with the Executive Director of ELA & Humanities
- Program Evaluation and Improvement
- Analyze student performance data to inform instructional decisions and program improvements
- Conduct regular program evaluations to ensure effectiveness and relevance
- Implement strategies to address areas of need and enhance overall program quality
- Professional Learning Communities (PLCs/Resource Hours)
- Coordinate and monitor the PLC process.
- Work with teachers to develop leadership within PLCs.
- Participate in the analysis of relevant academic data and support teacher/department use of data through PLCs
- Ensure alignment of PLC goals with department and school-wide improvement plans.
- Bachelor degree in Physical Education, Health Education, or related field
- Valid teaching certification in Physical Education and/or Health Education
- Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience in related subjects
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency in technology and data analysis
- Ability to stand for extended periods and move about the school campus
- Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and demonstrating physical activities
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and monitor student activities
