Job Summary
Provides a welcoming and reassuring initial point of access for applicants,
clients and visitors; Answers and screens incoming calls; takes messages; greets
clients and visitors; interviews applicants and completes applications for legal
services; determines eligibility for services; conducts conflict checks; under the
supervision of an attorney, provides legal advice and brief service; sorts mail;
prepares correspondence; documents all activities in CLS’ case management
system; orders office supplies; performs such other duties as are assigned.
Duties
1) Demonstrates Community Legal Services’ core values of Humanity, Respect, Collaboration and Excellence at all times and in all situations.
2) Reports to and is ready to work at the designated work hours. Work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday – Friday, except on CLS recognized holidays.
3) Rapidly answers and screens incoming telephone calls. Takes all messages in a polite and professional manner and maintains accuracy on all messages taken.
4) Greets clients and visitors and handles all contact in a polite, attentive, responsive and understanding manner.
5) Takes applications for legal services in an accurate and complete manner, accurately determines the nature of the problem and properly classifies they type of case or refers the applicant to another appropriate agency.
6) Determines eligibility, conducts conflict of interest checks and, under the direction of attorney(s), provides legal advice and brief service to clients.
7) Conducts client interviews, in person, telephonically or electronically.
8) Drafts documents necessary to provide brief service. Investigation which may include review of files of other agencies and written and personal contact with concerned parties or other agency personnel.
9) Promptly and accurately documents all actions in CLS’ case management system.
10) Maintains the master calendar for the office.
11) Receives, sorts and routes incoming and outgoing mail.
12) Prepares and files closing letters and assists Managing Attorney with case closure, as required. .
13) Acts as client's advocate during staffing process. Presents client’s situation in a holistic manner.
14) Orders office supplies.
15) Maintains the office library.
16) Filing, as necessary.
17) Reconciling petty cash accounts as necessary and providing billing statements and shipping papers to manager and accounts receivable.
18) Performs any other duties as requested or assigned by supervisor.
Requirements: High school graduate with related legal secretarial experience or graduate of a paralegal program. Must have accurate word processing skills and ability to perform secretarial and paralegal duties and functions. The applicant should have a demonstrated interest in assisting low-income people. Ability to speak read and write Spanish fluently is preferred.

Pay: $14.96 - $29.36 per hour
