Qualifications:
The position of Assistant Residential Director “ARD” requires a Bachelor’s Degree with 5 years of experience working in a related field (Home Community Based Service (HCS) or working with Individuals with Developmental Disabilities in the community). 3 years of experience as a Direct Manager/Supervisor in Residential Programs. The ARD must understand the commitment to community-based support operations for persons with disabilities, therefore, must be proactive in all areas of supports, supervision and decision making. He or she must understand the funding sources, methodology, and entitlement programs for people with disabilities.
Position Summary
The Assistant Residential Director (ARD) is a leader responsible for providing support and assistance to the Residential Director RD. The ARD is a professional committed to fostering Residential Programs growth through purposeful programming and intentional mentoring and advising. As the Agency Assistant Residential Director, the ARD assumes a number of roles in an effort to promote a positive living environment within the Residential Programs and the communities. The ARD assist in Participants and Residential development, leadership development, staff selections and training, implementation and assessment of Residential operations programming, and administrative activities that achieves the mission of Community Living of Rhode Island, CLRI and its Residences. The ARD supervises the Residential Coordinators, reports to the Residential Director, and has a higher expectation of administrative ability and development tasks beyond the ARD role.
This position requires ongoing communication with the Residential Director as well as other Agency Residential staff or the DSP. ARDs may be asked to assume some of the responsibilities of the Residential Director in his/her absence. ARDs are expected to meet expectations with a spirit of integrity and discipline. It is the expectation of Community Living of Rhode Island that ARDs adhere to the highest standards of ethical behavior throughout all of their functions and areas of responsibilities. Additionally, it is expected that ARDs maintain good stewardship for their own professional progress by role modeling positive work ethics behavior.
Duties and Responsibilities
The ARD will assist and consult with the RD on tasks related to the Coordinators, Managers, Assistant Managers and DSP’s, conduct peer support, crisis management, and referral for Coordinators, Managers, Assistant Managers and DSP’s in order to help achieve the mission of CLRI Residential Programs. Expectation of the ARD is the ability to perform and provide the following:
1. Community and Staff Development
The Assistant Residential Director is responsible for creating an atmosphere in which Residential Program Staff uphold the principles of Respect, Dignity and Healthiness of the Participants at all times and extend respect to the community, environment, and the physical building. ARDs are expected to assist in the development of inclusive communities that foster good relationship between neighbors and individuals with disabilities, personal development and multicultural awareness.
- Establish and maintain open relationships with diverse individuals in the Residential community, regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability, veteran status, creed, marital status, and sexual orientation.
- Create and maintain an atmosphere that stimulates Residential healthiness, social, personal growth and development.
- Assess, initiate, plan and implement community development activities to address the needs and concerns of the Participants.
- Serve as a resource for information and a referral source to support services available in CLRI.
- Encourage all Residential Programs staff to participate and contribute to the Employees Relation Committee “ERC”.
- Maintain ongoing visibility and communication with programs staff within all Residential Program community via various media (website, emails, Facebook etc.).
2. Employees Conduct and Behavior Management
The ARD is expected to model and communicate standards of behavior necessary for maintaining an atmosphere conducive to programs daily operations and positive community living, including educating Residential Program’s staff CLRI policies and procedures. ARDs are responsible for confronting all policy violations within Residential staff and for impressing upon Residential staff of their responsibilities for their own actions. ARDs also help staff understand the realistic consequences of their behavior when documented.
- Serve as a member of the on-call rotation team for CLRI including during holidays periods
- Serve as Agency first Responders in Emergency situations
- Serve as a mentor, motivator, and resource person in encouraging staff to take ownership of their programs.
- Respond to staff behavior that are inappropriate and/or in violation of Agency and/or Residential programs policies and procedures.
- Act as a mediator in conflict situations as needed (i.e. roommate conflicts, noise disruptions, and other disputes, etc.).
- Serve as conduct officer for low level conduct cases for the Agency and follow the Agency established due processes. If in doubt at any point, please revert to the Executive Director.
- Be aware of all or most Agency’s resources and procedures to give appropriate guidelines staff as needed.
4. Professional Development & Leadership
The ARD is expected to actively support decisions of the Residential Director, other members of the Management staff, Agency Human Resource department, Financial/Accounting department and Residential programs. ARDs provide administrative, training, facilitation and programming support to the Residential Director. It is the ARD’s role to be a positive influence on staff and for all endeavors of the RD and Agency divers Programs. This position is expected to be a strong support to the Residential Director and perform on a level beyond the RA in oversight, planning, leadership, and overall effort in ensuring the successful operation of the Residential Programs and the overall Agency support services rendered to the participants.
- Serve as a resource and mentor to new staff by sharing experiences, offering insight to handling programs issues and in assisting with confrontations, mediations, questions and concerns.
- Assist the RD in the training and shadowing process for all new hires across Agency programs.
- Participate in and assist with the development and delivery of weekly, monthly or quarterly staff meetings.
- Assist the RD in the creation of staff development and training opportunities for residential staff throughout the year.
- Provide feedback and/or assist the Residential Director with performance evaluations.
- Serve as a member of the departmental committees to assist in the planning and facilitation of staff training, in-services, selection, development and training.
- Meet monthly as an ARD team to discuss individual areas of interest and/or concern.
Required Certification:
Assistant Residential Directors need to be certified in CPR and First Aid. Community Living will be offering monthly classes, which staff may participate in.
Internal Relationships:
Executive Director, Associate Director, Nursing Supervisor, Program Coordinator, Financial Officers, Administrative Assistant, Direct Care Supervisor, DSP, other Counseling staff in person and on the phone.
External Relationships:
Day programs, Participants family members, Behavioral Health Developmental Disabilities & Hospitals.
Equipment Used:
Photocopy machine, Cellular Phone, Fax machine and Computer Network System.
Special Working Conditions:
Awareness of Universal Precautions.
