CMCB is seeking a motivated and student-centered part-time lead elementary general music teacher to provide weekly group instruction to students of elementary age in the Greater Boston area schools / community partners and at the Community Music School in the South End . This is a great opportunity for candidates with demonstrated group teaching experience who are looking for community , growth and leadership opportunities , and a compensation structure that also includes paid administrative time and paid professional development opportunities.

Further teaching opportunities are available for candidates with the ability to play and teach multiple instruments and / or candidates who are interested in private teaching.

Status : Part time hourly, exempt

Start Date : ASAP or April 2025 (programming is already running)

Schedule : In person, 20 - 25 hours a week, Monday 8 : 00-2 : 00, Wednesday 11-12, Thursday 9 : 00-2 : 30, and Friday 9 : 30-2 : 00; additional afternoons preferred with room for growth in the upcoming school year

Specific Responsibilities

Music Instruction and Curriculum Development

  • Provide engaging, culturally inclusive, learner-centered, accessible and motivating general music group instruction
  • Work with students and school staff to develop mid- and end-of-year culminating events
  • Develop instructional materials and lesson plans as part of building a general curriculum
  • Support execution and resource development of CMCB student musical Pathways

Leadership

  • Supervise, mentor, train, and coach early childhood instructors in developmentally appropriate practices following policies and procedures, including meeting with instructors bi-weekly, conducting semester-based classroom observations, and facilitating year-end reviews
  • Lead quarterly faculty department meetings
  • Create opportunities for faculty gathering, learning, and development around real-time classroom goals and school climate
  • Collaborate with program leadership in all aspects of early childhood program offerings, including recruitment and retention analysis, student and family engagement, and faculty staffing
  • Administrative Responsibilities

  • Engage in at least three paid professional development opportunities on an annual basis, including the annual faculty orientation
  • Participate in mid-year and year end reviews
  • Communicate clearly with CMCB staff and partners
  • Complete class and / or lesson attendance in registration software accurately
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Bachelor's degree in Music, Performing Arts, Education, or equivalent professional experience with strong musical abilities and proficiency in playing one or more instruments
  • Minimum of 2-3 years teaching experience, including demonstrated experience teaching ages 4-7 and knowledge of early childhood pedagogies / developmentally appropriate practices
  • Strong time management and classroom management skills
  • Demonstrated experience teaching fundamental and introductory music material to students of elementary school age
  • Experience working with diverse populations of students
  • Must be adept at and comfortable with working in a culturally diverse environment with a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as pedagogical and professional values
  • Interest in the following focus areas : culturally inclusive teaching, amplifying student voice, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
  • Availability during school hours (Monday - Friday, 8 : 30 - 3 : 30)
  • Ability to motivate and / or inspire others
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, when conversing with students, families, and colleagues
  • Positive attitude and growth mindset
  • Demonstrated ability to actively listen to and learn from others
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite (Google Docs, Google Forms, and Google Sheets), email, and the ability to learn new systems as required

  • Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the person in this position must be able to to remain in a stationary position 25-50% of the time. They need to constantly move around the space to access teaching supplies, instruments, and students. They must also converse with students in a normal classroom setting and discern and recognize changes in tone, pitch, rhythm, and volume. They may occasionally move or transport supplies and instruments up to 10 pounds.
