Position Summary: The Birth Center RN Manager is responsible for ensuring smooth patient flow and team coordination for patient care in our Family Health and Birth Center. This individual will also ensure high quality of care for patients following the guidelines of the Birth Center model as applicable. The Birth Center RN Manager will report directly to our Nurse Director of Clinical Services, and will be responsible for the supervision of the RN and non-RN Birth Assistants and other birth support staff. This is a full-time position located at our Family Health and Birth Center in NE DC.

Salary - This position starts at $95,000 - $105,000 annually and the offer amount is determined by the candidate's education, qualifications, and experience. Indeed provides their own estimated salary calculator and is not affiliated with COH's range.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Highlighted Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise RN Birth Assistants and other birth support staff.
  • Meets with supervisees regularly and provides ongoing feedback and support, including opportunities for professional development.
  • Responsible for the administration and application of all clinical nursing functions, procedures, and protocols.
  • Conducts new employee interviews for Birth Assistants.
  • Conducts in-service or refresher training as needed for clinical staff to maintain and further their medical knowledge.
  • Reviews the performance of team members in a timely manner, including completing 90 day and annual performance evaluations per their due dates and documenting any issues or changes.
  • Maintains logs for all newborn screenings to ensure that results are obtained in a timely manner for all Newborn patients and reported to government agencies as requested.
  • Ensure that COH clinical protocols are followed by medical facility.
  • Assists with analysis and preparation of clinical data and maintains logs for all newborn screenings needed for reporting to multiple government agencies or internal sources as requested.
  • Manages inventory of medical supplies and ensures maintenance of medical equipment in the birth center.
  • Maintains monthly on-call schedule for all Birth Assistants.
  • Ensures that CLIA compliance and other quality assurance requirements are maintained.
  • Complies with and helps to enforce standard organizational policies and procedures as described in the COH toolbox.

Nursing Responsibilities

(as needed when providing coverage for Birth Assistant at Birth Center)

  • Sets up birth room for patient in labor (including checks of emergency equipment).
  • Provides ongoing nursing support for patient and family at the Birth Center as appropriate from admission to discharge.
  • Prepares patient for examination and treatment, including, but not limited to, taking patient history, checking maternal vital signs, and neonatal vital signs at intervals according to the Policy and Practice Guidelines; reporting any abnormal values to midwife.
  • Answers triage phone calls by assessing the patient’s medical condition and determining if patient needs to be seen by the provider or should be sent immediately to the Emergency Room.
  • Assists Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) with tasks surrounding delivery of infant, including but not limited to: ensuring that needed instruments are within reach, assisting with drying and stimulating neonate, and assisting with emergency procedures as dictated by CNM.
  • Performs IV starts and routine blood draws as needed at the discretion of the provider.
  • Provides patient education and care planning for perinatal patients.
  • Assists CNMs with tasks surrounding delivery of infant, including but not limited to: ensuring that needed instruments are within reach, assisting with drying and stimulating neonate, and assisting with emergency procedures as dictated by CNM.
  • Completes home visits on day 1 and day 3 after the birth, including completing an evaluation of the mother and baby, performing newborn metabolic screen, providing breastfeeding information and support, and completing a phone call during the first week postpartum and facilitate a health assessment postpartum period, communicating any concerns to the CNM.
  • Other duties as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Nursing is required.
  • A current, unencumbered DC Registered Nurse (RN) license with current CPR certification required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Current NRP certifications required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience required.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience attending a minimum of 20 labors and births required; experience with out-of-hospital births a plus.
  • Completion of skills test on or before first day of employment;
  • Commitment to work with underserved populations;
  • Ability to work in a non-profit environment.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for scheduled birth center events and mandatory trainings.
  • Bilingual preferred.
