Job Title: MVG Grant Homeless Specialist                       Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Lead Social Worker                                             Pay Grade:  Professional Pay Grade 1

Dept./School:  Community Outreach Center                           Days:  187

Grant Funded: 3 Year Grant Funded                                      Term: Ends June 2027

Primary Purpose: Provide case management services to middle school students identified as McKinney Vento Homeless (MVG) designed to help improve academic performance and reduce drop out rates.        

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Psychology, Criminal Justice or related social service field. Social work degree and licensure preferred.

 

 

            Special Knowledge Skills:

           

  • Knowledge of how to access community agencies and organizations.  Knowledge of the federal McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act. 
  • Proficiency in English and Spanish preferred.

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Provide case management services to middle school MVG students.
  • Work with school personnel to identify MVG students with attendance problems and or social-economic needs to prevent students from dropping out.
  • Monitor MVG student academic progress and provide academic interventions.
  • Ensure MVG students have access to tutoring services
  • Ensure MVG students have knowledge of and access to extra-curricular activities
  • Provide truancy prevention measures for MVG students
  • Facilitate campus based enrollment conferences for MVG students within 2 weeks of enrollment
  • Assist MVG students in obtaining school supplies, clothing, food, shelter, utilities and other basic needs.
  • Work with parents of MVG students to enhance parenting skills.
  • Monitor the campus drop out list on a weekly basis and provide immediate interventions when MVG students attempt to drop out.
  • Contact MVG students who have truancy/attendance problems in a timely manner to resolve barriers to attendance.
  • Meet with the district dropout prevention committee on a monthly basis to detail drop out recovery activities and interventions at the campus.
  • Work through the court system to enforce school attendance laws.
  • Serve as a liaison between the campus and the home by making home visits and assist in compiling information from student/family contacts that will be used in developing an intervention plan for the MVG student and his/her parents with the goal of improving attendance, making the school a positive learning experience thus increasing completion rates.
  • Present a positive image of the school to parents and convey to them the school's genuine concern with the education, growth, and development of each child and the importance of graduating on time.
  • Provide training to campus staff regarding identifying and serving MVG youth.
  • Provide a tutoring and credit recovery system for MVG students.
  • Make home visits already stated in above bullet
  • Maintain a professional awareness of regulations regarding child welfare and attendance by having a working knowledge of state laws, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  • Perform community service outreach work as a culturally sensitive student-support person.
  • Assist students and parents in interpreting and completing necessary paperwork and application forms for local, state, and federal services.
  • Assist students with transportation needs.
  • Become knowledgeable of community services and eligibility requirements for services.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all students and their particular situations and circumstances.
  • Serve as a member to the Community Outreach Center (COC) team.
  • Perform any other duties and tasks assigned.
