Job Summary:   Teachers at Community Roots Academy are responsible for planning and organizing learning material as well as instructing students in a project-based learning environment. Teachers guide students through the learning process and encourage them to develop and fulfill their academic potential.


Work Hours: 7:30am-4:00pm Monday through Friday (except on school holidays and breaks).

Reports to: Middle School Director and Executive Director of Education


Essential Functions of the job may include but are not limited to:

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
  • Develop schemes of work, lesson plans and assessments that are in accordance with established procedures.
  • Use relevant curriculum, materials, and technology to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.
  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.
  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments in a timely manner. Provide timely and appropriate feedback to students. 
  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, charter requirements, district policies and school regulations.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities, including 1st and 2nd semester report cards and individual student narratives.
  • Participate in regular parent meetings, including 504s, IEPs, Parent Teacher Conferences, behavior meetings, etc.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and learning activities, including weekly professional development meetings. 
  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone calls and answer emails.
  • Sub as needed, and within reason during open prep periods.
  • Support team goals as developed in the PLC. Work collaboratively with grade level and subject matter teams toward highly rigorous expectations for students.
  • Participate in and help plan Middle School social events, including field trips, dances, sports tournaments, and clubs. 
  • Facilitate and attend PBL Presentations, Student and Parent Orientations, Back To SchooL Night, Expo Night, Film Festival.
  • Facilitate and attend field trips, including grade level overnight(s) and after school student social(s)  events (minimum of one). 
  • Facilitate PBL, electives and one middle school specific project (which may include yearbook, student counsel, Advisory program, field trip planning, PBL planning, etc.) as included in the school day.

    • B.A/B.S degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field of teaching
    • California State secondary teaching credential and CLAD certification 
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
    • Must have the ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
    • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program. Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.
  • Meet professional teacher education requirements of school, charter, district and state.


Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, twist, turn, bend, walk, talk, hear, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Regularly required to operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Regularly required to see and observe students, walk and/or stand for extended periods of time, and hear and speak to exchange information.
  • Regularly required to possess dexterity of hand and fingers, kneel, bend at the waist, sit on the floor, climb stairs, and reach overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to perform assigned duties; lift light objects.
  • Regularly required to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly.
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

Compensation: 

FLSA Status: Exempt 


The following are eligible for additional stipend compensation:

  • Core Elective, Zero period =$1523/00 / per semester
  • Pathway elective - Stipend = $761.00 / per semester
  • School clubs $507.00 per semester (before, after school, lunch time)


The following are not eligible for additional compensation:

  • Student Office hours (before school, after school, snack or lunch times)
  • Subbing during open (prep) periods. 
  • Attending meetings during open (prep) period
  • Supervisions, including subbing for another staff member (snack, lunch, before or after school)
  • Attending grade level events before or after school events (including but not limited to P/T conferences, Expo, Film Festival, Socials, PBL presentations, Orientations, Back to School, etc)
  • Attending Field Trips including grade level overnight field trips

Salary : $58,000 - $60,000
