What are the responsibilities and job description for the DSP - Independent Living position at COMMUNITY SERVICES FOR EVERY1 INC?
Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) provide a wide variety of person-centered supports and services to people with developmental disabilities. DSPs empower the people they work for providing education, experience, and exposure so they can make their own informed choices. DSPs model, teach and advocate for people with developmental disabilities to support them to achieve their highest level of independent living, enable their fullest participation in society, ensure their civil and human rights are protected and promote their ability to be productive, contributing members of the community. In this position it also provides support and supervision to individuals with developmental disabilities. In addition will provide support and supervision to a person with a developmental disability who resides in his own home, helping him to live out the life he has planned.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Models and promotes Person Centered Planning, considering the dreams and goals of the person being served.
- Provides supervision and assistance to ensure his health & safety.
- Provides physical assistance with life skills including cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, mobility, and recreation.
- Provides transportation when necessary.
- Performs housekeeping duties including cleaning and food preparation, involving person when appropriate.
- Maintains required records including daily notes, timesheets, mileage logs, and incident reports.
- Cooperatively works with families to ensure the person’s valued outcomes are being addressed and he/she is living the life he/she has planned for.
- Assists with tracking expenditures, routine maintenance, repairs, and other operational duties.
- Provides assistance with various assignments including the purchase of food, supplies, and medications.

Education and Experience
- High School Diploma/GED
- Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of developmental disabilities.
- Good oral and written communication skills and basic computer skills.
- Must be able to read and write case notes as well as understand written direction.
- Verifications and Screenings
- OPWDD clearance for convictions of criminal offenses.
- A drug screen prior to the commencement of employment.
- Be authorized as an Agency Driver by
- Holding and maintaining a valid NYS Driver’s License.
- Maintaining an approved driving record according to Agency Policy and Procedure.
- Have and maintain have use of personal vehicle for work purposes; travel between work locations and transporting people served;
- Proof of insurance being current as a driver on personal vehicle being used for work purposes.
- Physical and Mental Requirements
- Seeing, hearing, walking, sitting, standing, driving, stooping, bending, carrying, stretching, and climbing stairs.
- Lifting up to fifty (50) pounds.
- The ability to exercise independent judgment, ability to concentrate, think, communicate, interact with others and cope with stressful situations and deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
- Staying awake and alert while on duty.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Hours worked may be hours outside of normal business hours.
- Local travel required approximately 30% of the time.
*Driving and vehicle requirements are specific to needs of persons on caseload.
