Community Servings' mission is to actively engage the community to provide medically tailored, nutritious, scratch-made meals to chronically and critically ill individuals and their families. We are a dynamic and fast-growing agency at the forefront of the "Food is Medicine" field, providing over 1M medically tailored meals annually to clients and their families experiencing illness and food insecurity in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In addition, our work strongly focuses on supporting the regional local food system, delivering high-quality nutrition education to the community, and hosting an on-site food-service workforce development program. Over the past 35 years, the agency has provided 13M free, scratch-made meals.

 

About the Role

Community Servings has experienced significant growth in Leadership Giving since closing out a $12.2M capital campaign in 2019, now raising over $2.4M annually.  The Director of Major and Planned Giving will oversee the Leadership and Planned Giving Programs.  They will develop and execute an annual plan to cultivate, solicit and steward major donors.  The Director of Major and Planned Giving will utilize moves management tools to increase the giving levels of existing donors and create a new pool of potential donors through research, relationship building and outreach, collaborating with the Board of Directors, Board of Advisors, Development staff, and Executive team to achieve fundraising goals for major gifts.  They will hire, train and manage a team to support the program.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Building on the success of our current program and team, hires, trains and manages up to five new staff (one to two per year).
  • Researches, cultivates, solicits, and stewards a portfolio of major donors and other prospects to achieve annual fundraising objectives of $2M for major gifts.
  • Ensures each MGO on the team conducts a minimum of 100 visits annually with key donors and prospects.
  • Develops strategies to target new donors and creates a new portfolio of major donors.        Works with CDO, Director of Development, MGO and CEO to develop a strategy for large gifts of $50,000 or more.  
  • Partners with staff, Board, and other internal and external partners to set and achieve goals, produce major donor events and materials, and meet budget expectations.
  • Conducts weekly meetings with senior staff to review major donor progress and set strategy.
  • Works directly with donors to solicit gifts and build strong community support for programs at Community Servings.
  • Responsible for major donor events, and major donor activities at signature events, including planning, program and follow-up.
  • Identifies and implements strategies within the major donor program to involve major donors in fundraising, marketing, and volunteer activities.
  • Works with Development administrative staff to ensure prompt acknowledgement of all gifts related to major donors.
  • Represents Community Servings to internal and external partners to grow and maintain key relationships.
  • Oversee Moves Management System for cultivating, stewarding and soliciting gifts.
  • Create Major Gifts Budget, income and expense projections providing monthly and quarterly updates to CDO & CEO.
  • Market, cultivate and solicit members for our planned giving program, The Bernie Smith Society.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Communications to develop messaging, create collateral materials, and a meaningful donor recognition program (Annual Report, website)
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications Required

  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Minimum of ten years of experience working in a fast-paced nonprofit development role with at least five years of experience personally soliciting five and six figure gifts. 
  • Experience working in a major gifts environment that frequently utilizes special events is a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in planned giving, including charitable gift annuities, bequests, trusts, or other deferred giving vehicles. Ability to engage donors in meaningful conversations about legacy giving and integrate planned giving strategies into major gift fundraising.
  • Operates effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Demonstrates superior time management skills with the ability to work effectively under, and consistently meet tight deadlines, and adapt priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strategic mindset with an ability to think and focus on both the near- and long-term.
  • Comfortable with public speaking.
  • Available evenings and weekends for donor visits and events as needed.
  • SalesForce and Microsoft Office proficiency are a must.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

Currently managing the MGO.   Anticipate hiring a Development Associate support position in FY26 and, eventually, as fundraising grows, a future team of four Major Gift and Planned Giving Officers and two Development Associates
