Direct care counselors work directly with individuals who have disabilities or special needs and need assistance with day-to-day living, those dealing with mental disorders or substance abuse. Their primary goal is to improve well-being through counseling sessions, behavioral interventions, and skill building, and shifts can extend to evenings and weekends, including holidays.
Direct Care Counselor Duties and Responsibilities
Teach Independent Living Skills An important duty of direct care counselors is helping clients with their day-to-day living. To encourage independence, they implement behavioral interventions and teach practical skills.
Assist with Routine Care This can include more hands-on aspects such as hygiene or medication administration. More commonly, they handle logistical tasks like supervising family visits and escorting clients to medical appointments and other outside activities.
Monitor Behavior Being a direct care counselor involves regularly monitoring client behavior and medications while checking the progress of intervention plans through daily logs. For thorough documentation, direct care counselors also engage in direct observation and maintain a comfortable environment where clients can talk openly.
Provide Coaching Direct care counselors spend ample one-on-one time with clients in order to get to know them better. Through counseling sessions, they help clients deal with their emotions, cultivate healthy relationships, and understand themselves better, in addition to addressing other concerns that clients may have.
Coordinate Recreational Activities Since having a sense of community is a major part of mental health, direct care counselors create and organize recreational activities for clients. These may be held outside so clients can meet new people.
Direct Care Counselor Skills and Qualifications
Informed by their knowledge of patient care and psychology, direct care counselors excel at creating a safe, nurturing space for clients and overseeing day-to-day details.
- Psychological acumen - direct care counselors should be well-versed at assessing clients’ mental and emotional states and determining the proper course of action to improve their well-being
- Empathy– direct care counselors are patient and empathetic with clients, maintaining a positive, nonjudgmental attitude even in challenging situations
- Attention to detail– it’s crucial to be observant and detail-oriented when creating documentation, monitoring clients, and checking medical protocols
- Patient care– they must know the basics of patient care, especially if their duties include assisting clients firsthand with daily activities
- Interpersonal skills– direct care counselors connect well with clients, communicating their ideas clearly while also being good listeners
Direct Care Counselor Education and Training
A high school diploma at minimum, , as is at least 2 year of experience working in a similar setting.
