We are looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Accountant 1 to join our Controller Disbursements (CNTL-DISB) Group. In this role, you will be responsible for reviewing and processing subcontractor invoices, ensuring that all costs align with subcontract requirements. You’ll collaborate closely with subcontractors, project managers, and internal teams to resolve invoice and payment issues, helping to keep LANL’s operations running smoothly.
What You’ll Do
As an Accountant 1, you will:
✔ Process subcontractor invoices to ensure accurate and timely payments
✔ Verify costs for compliance with contract terms, supporting documentation, and financial policies
✔ Analyze financial data, identifying discrepancies and recommending solutions
✔ Work cross-functionally with subcontractors, project managers, and financial teams to resolve invoice-related issues
✔ Support financial reporting and compliance efforts within LANL’s financial framework
✔ Improve processes and enhance efficiency in disbursements and payment operations
What You Need To Succeed Essential Skills & Qualifications
🔹 Accounting & Financial Knowledge: Experience in accounting, accounts payable, bookkeeping, or similar roles, with knowledge of GAAP and government financial regulations
🔹 Contract & Subcontract Understanding: Familiarity with contract types (time & materials, labor hours, cost reimbursement) and compliance requirements
🔹 Problem-Solving Ability: Strong analytical skills to research, gather, and interpret financial data and propose solutions
🔹 Customer Service & Teamwork: Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, balancing multiple priorities under strict deadlines
🔹 Communication Skills: Clear and professional verbal and written communication for interacting with internal and external stakeholders
🔹 Technical Proficiency: Experience using financial software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications (Nice To Have)
⭐ Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
⭐ Previous experience with government contracts and financial accounting regulations
⭐ Experience working in a large, complex organization
Education & Experience
📌 Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field, with 2 years of relevant experience. Equivalent education and experience combinations will be considered.
Location & Work Arrangement
📍 Los Alamos, NM (Hybrid/Telework Available)
This position offers a hybrid work model with telework flexibility. Candidates must be within a two-hour ground commute of Los Alamos, NM, with periodic onsite work as required. Work location is subject to change based on business needs.
