Impact
As a Project Manager 2 / Superintendent 3 within the Construction Management Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory, you will play a vital role in supporting national security by leading critical construction projects at one of the most secure and high-stakes facilities in the country. Your leadership will directly impact mission execution, safety, and infrastructure performance within the nation's premier nuclear science and engineering laboratory.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Lead construction projects exceeding $500k in value.
- Oversee and mentor Superintendent 2s as necessary.
- Manage all phases of construction from planning to closeout, including scope, schedule, and budget management.
- Serve as Control Account Manager (CAM) for assigned projects, responsible for cost control, scheduling, and performance reporting.
- Perform risk management by identifying issues, developing mitigation strategies, and ensuring resolution implementation.
- Conduct constructability reviews to ensure designs align with project goals and budget.
- Coordinate with project controls staff to ensure accurate performance tracking (including EVMS).
- Initiate and support investigations of abnormal events, safety incidents, or near misses and implement corrective actions.
- Interface with federal sponsors to present project updates, performance status, and issue resolution plans.
- Promote health, safety, and environmental compliance and ensure adherence to LANL safety and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Interpret and apply technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
- Utilize computerized work management systems to track project activities, materials, and scheduling.
- Maintain strong customer engagement and communication with stakeholders, sponsors, and regulatory bodies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Active DOE Q Clearance (deal breaker; must be active at time of hire)
- Nuclear construction experience
- 10 years of hands-on experience in construction project management
- Proven ability to lead and direct teams in a secure, fast-paced, and safety-focused environment
- Strong understanding of project scope, schedule, and cost management using Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS)
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve project risks and implement corrective action plans
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including report writing and presentation to leadership and federal stakeholders
Desired Skills
- Experience working in secure nuclear facilities or DOE/NNSA environments
- Adaptability and responsiveness in dynamic or evolving project environments
- Familiarity with collective bargaining agreements and working with represented trades
- Knowledge of configuration management, work control systems, and facility operations
- Ability to read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and architectural schematics
- Customer service orientation and ability to collaborate across departments
- Ability to work physically demanding shifts (lifting up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, navigating stairs)
Education and Experience Requirements
- No formal degree required; equivalent experience is acceptable
- Preferred: Recognized degree in engineering, construction management, or related field, or specialized training in project management
- Minimum of 10 years experience in construction, engineering, or procurement
