Senior Project Manager / Construction Superintendent
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) – Construction Management Division
Position Overview:
The Construction Management (CM) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking an experienced Project Manager 2 / Construction Superintendent 3 to lead and oversee complex construction projects exceeding $500K. This role is pivotal in ensuring project success through strategic planning, execution, risk management, and technical oversight. The selected candidate will provide leadership to project teams, mentor junior superintendents, and ensure adherence to federal regulations, safety standards, and project controls.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned construction leader with proven expertise in project management, earned value management systems (EVMS), risk mitigation, and construction execution in nuclear environments. This position requires an active DOE Q Clearance and extensive experience managing nuclear facility projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Project Leadership & Execution:
- Lead high-impact construction projects, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and under budget.
- Provide oversight for Superintendent 2s, ensuring project goals align with LANL’s mission and compliance standards.
- Initiate and lead investigations into abnormal events, incidents, and accidents, determining root causes and corrective actions.
- Project Controls & Risk Management:
- Serve as a Control Account Manager (CAM), responsible for budgeting, scheduling, and performance tracking for construction projects.
- Develop realistic work packages, ensuring accurate cost estimation, scheduling, and variance analysis.
- Conduct risk assessments, implement mitigation strategies, and establish contingency plans to minimize project disruptions.
- Construction Oversight & Compliance:
- Lead constructability reviews, evaluating design impacts on cost, schedule, and execution feasibility.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols, lockout/tagout procedures, and nuclear construction regulations.
- Maintain a strong understanding of collective bargaining agreements across multiple trades to ensure efficient workforce management.
- Oversee D&D (Decontamination & Decommissioning), facility maintenance, upgrades, and renovations with a focus on systems engineering and configuration management.
- Stakeholder Engagement & Reporting:
- Interface with federal sponsors, program managers, and senior leadership to provide status updates, performance reports, and issue resolution plans.
- Communicate project risks, trends, and corrective actions effectively to stakeholders through presentations and detailed reports.
- Develop and foster strong relationships with vendors, suppliers, and regulatory bodies to ensure seamless project execution.
Required Qualifications:
✔ Proven Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale construction projects, direct cross-functional teams, and manage high-stakes projects within a regulated environment.
✔ Project Management Expertise: Advanced knowledge in project scope management, scheduling, budgeting, and execution, with experience using Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS).
✔ Risk & Safety Management: Extensive experience in identifying and mitigating project risks, ensuring compliance with DOE nuclear safety protocols and federal construction regulations.
✔ Technical & Construction Knowledge: Deep understanding of all construction phases, including facility upgrades, renovations, D&D, and systems engineering.
✔ Regulatory & Compliance Expertise: Extensive experience with federal construction standards, safety policies, and lockout/tagout procedures.
✔ Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Ability to engage with senior leadership, present technical reports, and provide actionable solutions for complex project challenges.
✔ Nuclear Construction Experience: Strong background in nuclear facility projects, ensuring adherence to DOE and federal regulations.
✔ Clearance Requirement: Active DOE Q Clearance required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications: PMP, PE, or other relevant construction management certifications.
- Advanced Technical Proficiency: Experience with computerized work management systems to track job activities, vendor coordination, and resource management.
- Industry Expertise: Prior experience in nuclear, government, or high-security facility construction projects.
Work Schedule & Additional Requirements:
- Flexible Schedule Required: Candidates must be available for day and graveyard shifts as project needs dictate.
