DESCRIPTION OF THE SCHOOL
Compass Charter School is an inquiry-based, progressive elementary school that opened in the fall of 2014 in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. We are committed to providing an experiential and democratic elementary experience to all children, with intentional access for children who typically do not get access to progressive education (children with special needs, children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, and English language learners).
Our Integrated Curriculum centers sustainability in all forms: environmental, racial, and economic justice. Our staff works interdependently in collaborative teams and engages in professional inquiry (instructional coaching, reflection, restorative and trauma-informed practices). Compass enrolls approximately 330 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Compass Charter School is seeking a part-time (2-3 days a week with flexible schedule) speech therapist to join our team and provide IEP-mandated speech therapy services to students with disabilities to students in our Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Direct Service
Provide evidence-based speech and language therapy to students, both in pull-out and push-in settings, as determined by individualized education plans (IEPs) and best practices. Develop and implement engaging therapy activities and materials that align with students' goals. Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment for students with speech and language needs to increase access to general education and support progress toward individual goals.
Collaboration
Collaborate with classroom co-teachers, learning specialists, social workers, and other related service providers to support integrating speech and language goals into the general education curriculum. In collaboration with the student’s team, draft IEP reports in preparation for IEP meetings, including sharing progress reports, revising and/or drafting relevant goals, making service recommendations, and contributing insights to developing and implementing students’ IEPs. Attend IEP meetings for students on caseload. Provide guidance and support to teachers and other staff for students with speech and language needs. Maintain regular communication with student’s families to keep them informed of progress and answer questions they may have about speech and language therapy and how to support their child at home.
Documentation and Reporting
Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessments, progress notes, IEP reports, and therapy plans. Report progress toward IEP goals three times yearly (November, March, and June).
COMPENSATION
Provider will be paid directly by the DOE-contracted agency or through Related Services Authorization (RSA) Voucher. Compensation is hourly commensurate with experience and education.
