Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100 year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
Salary range: $105,000 - $115-000 annually
Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, primarily during standard business hours
Location: 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. Hybrid.

Position Description:
The Accounting Manager supports with month-end closing activities, revenue recognition, and cash management to ensure they are performed in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner. The Accounting Manager will also support the Controller in updating, developing, and implementing financial policies and procedures for the department.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Support the Controller in updating, developing, and implementing financial policies and procedures for the department.
- Supervise all aspects of revenue recognition, ensuring donor intent is identified and complied with.
- Supervise AR Specialist, including interviewing, onboarding, coaching, and performance assessment; set direct reports for success through clear setting of expectations, developmental and growth opportunities, and clear, consistent, and timely performance management.
- Review aged receivable reports and ensure that they are collected wholly and timely.
- Manage grant expense allocation and spending to meet time and purpose restrictions.
- Manage the release of restricted grants and collaborate with the development department to prepare grant-related financial reports as needed.
- Prepare bank reconciliation for all bank accounts and investments and coordinate with the team to ensure all banking-related transactions are entered into the accounting system and posted on time.
- Manage cash projections and processes appropriate transfers between bank accounts.
- Liaise with banks to process transactions and resolve problems
- Provide support in payroll-related activities when the Payroll Manager or Controller is out.
- Support in the preparation of annual financial audits, tax returns, and other filings required by Federal, State, and Local government agencies
- Assist in annual budgeting and planning process
- Support the CFO and Controller with special projects and other responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Five years relevant nonprofit experience, including developing finance policies and procedures, revenue recognition, cash management, and month and closing activities.
- Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving mindset.
- Significant experience and understanding of nonprofit contributions.
- Firm grasp of accounting principles and thorough knowledge of OMB Uniform Guidance.
- Ability to simplify and explain complex financial concepts.
- Thorough understanding of Excel. Salesforce experience a plus!
- Supervision experience preferred but not required.

Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary: $105,000 - $115,000. Exempt role.
- Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, increasing to 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
- Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
- Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6.
Location and Other Details:
- Office location: 37 Grove St., less than a block from Civic Center BART/MUNI station
- This is primarily an on-site role, with the option to work remotely 1-2 days per week after the first three months
- Covid vaccination required for all staff
