Summary
The VP Assistant General Counsel serves as the primary point of contact regarding all labor and employment legal issues (U.S. and Canada) and litigation arising in the company. This role will serve as a trusted business partner that understands the company’s business goals while minimizing risk. The VP Assistant General Counsel will advise management, Human Resources, and the business generally regarding employment law issues and pending or potential litigation.
Essential Job Functions include, but are not limited to the following:

- Provide day-to-day advice on a broad range of employment issues, including recruiting, hiring, compensation and benefits, wage and hour, payroll, performance management, and terminations.
- Advise and partner with Operations, Human Resources and other business persons regarding collective bargaining, labor-related arbitrations and other labor matters.
- Support internal and external investigations of complaints concerning alleged violations of company policies, laws, and regulations.
- Draft, review, analyze, and negotiate employment-related agreements, including consulting, severance, non-compete, and confidentiality agreements.
- Manage all litigation of any type (including pre-litigation matters), including developing strategy, managing costs, leading e-discovery and updating management and other company personnel as appropriate.
- Support and provide day-to-day legal advice on workplace safety and mine safety (MSHA) matters.
- Develop and provide appropriate education and training on employment and litigation related matters.
- Serve as the point of contact and assist with legal matters concerning Compass Mineral’s environmental issues.
- Establish a rapport and working relationship with employees at all levels in order to act as a trusted advisor and encourage the proactive use of in-house legal counsel.
- Efficiently direct the workflow of outside legal counsel on matters requiring external expertise or additional legal support/capacity.
- Effectively manage outside counsel spend.
- Assist in developing the department budget, forecast and legal reserves.
- Some travel may be required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
- Degree: Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Bar qualification in Kansas, or ability to become licensed to practice law in Kansas.
- Years of Experience: Minimum of 8 years of legal practice experience in employment and litigation.
