Founded in 1984, CEI has grown into an effective advocate for freedom on a wide range of critical policy issues, including technology, telecommunications, free market environmentalism, employment policy, business and finance, health care, and consumer products regulation. CEI’s law and litigation program is integrated into other policy campaigns and has won key successes through challenges to regulation, statutes, and executive authority.


About the Senior Fellow in Health Policy 

CEI seeks a Senior Fellow in Health Policy to join our Center for Economic Freedom. The Senior Fellow in Health Policy will manage health policy issues for the organization and provide strategic direction for the project in accordance with CEI’s strategic goals.


The Senior Fellow in Health Policy will work from CEI’s Washington, DC office 4 days per week and be permitted to work remotely 1 day per week. The remote day may be of your choosing and should be regular (the same day each week).


Travel will be minimal for this position (approximately 10%).


Responsibilities

 Research

  • Researches and authors op-eds, OnPoints, Issue Analyses, memoranda, comments, speeches, presentations and magazine articles on the subjects of health policy and programs
  • Pays particular attention to reform of agencies (DHHS, FDA, CDC, NIH etc), programs and the relationship to state government

                Media/Communication

  • Performs TV and radio interviews
  • Identifies opportunities to write and place op-eds
  • Writes articles for CEI’s newsletter and similar products
  • Posts to CEI and allied blogs
  • Utilizes social media platforms as appropriate

                Public and Policymaker Education

  • Educates policymakers at federal, state, and local levels
  • Participates in the planning and execution of events (briefings)
  • Edits such educational material as may be necessary, including flyers, brochures, op-eds and studies
  • Manages public education campaigns

                Coalition Building

  • Works with colleagues in the free market health policy community to develop useful communication networks and, where appropriate, collaboration
  • Attends coalition meetings and briefings with colleagues from other organizations
  • Organizes ad hoc coalitions on specific issues

                Advocacy

  • Appears on panels
  • Makes speeches and/or presentations

                Management

  • Works with Center Director to ensure the smooth running of the Center for Economic Freedom, including scheduling, coordinating editorial activity, and internal communications between the Center and organization
  • Deputizes for Center Director as the need arises


Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years of related policy experience; management experience strongly preferred 
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new, complex issues quickly
  • Clear and demonstrated commitment to free markets and individual liberty
  • Solid excellent oral communication, writing, and editing abilities; any type of strong writing skills will be considered, but legislative and/or public affairs experience provides added benefit
  • Detail-oriented; you are relentless about accuracy and value good writing style
  • Team player; cheerful willingness to work with, not just alongside, colleagues who bring various skills, experiences, and perspectives to CEI’s mission
  • Eager to learn new things; open attitude toward the mundane nature of some research or administrative task
  • Ability to disagree agreeably
  • Self-starter mentality; willing and able to jump into project management
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Focused; ability to avoid distractions and get the job done right and on time
  • Curious and policy-minded; ability to take complex policy ideas and distill them in ways that are both factually accurate and interesting to external audiences

  • Positive, flexible attitude whenever needs or priorities shift


The projected annual salary range for this role is $100,000-$140,000, contingent upon the specific skills and experience of the selected candidate.
