Job Summary:
The Windup Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring the windup process in a manufacturing or production environment. This role includes ensuring proper alignment and tension of material, managing slitting operations, conducting accurate measurements, and handling the end-to-end process of winding material onto cores. The Windup Operator plays a critical role in maintaining efficiency, quality control, and safety during production runs.
Key Responsibilities:
Windup Setup & Operation:
- Scan and input necessary roll data, including QR codes, mat numbers, and cut widths.
- Set slitter blades to match the appropriate cut widths for the run.
- Set mat and roll lengths, ensuring correct calculations.
- Prepare cores by cutting the correct number and ensuring they are properly lubricated and coated with adhesive.
- Place cores onto the mandrels in the proper order, adhering to slitter guidelines.
- Hook the rope to the oven, guide it through the accumulator, and feed it through the rollers and windup system.
- Operate the windup line in both manual and automatic modes, ensuring correct tension and material feed.
Running Production:
- Ensure material is fed evenly and at the proper tension to prevent strain or bunching.
- Monitor and adjust manual settings to ensure smooth winding of material onto the cores.
- Switch to auto mode once the slit widths align with the cut plate, ensuring correct batch and packing operations.
- Stage and prepare new mandrels and cores as necessary, applying adhesive and aligning them with the correct slit widths.
- Monitor and adjust winding operations, making sure material is rolled evenly and properly onto the cores.
- Capture the correct roll lengths and print weight tickets at the appropriate stages.
Ticketing & Documentation:
- Weigh the rolls and trim twice, ensuring accuracy in the weight and documentation of scrap rolls.
- Attach printed weight tickets to rolls, ensuring proper labeling and tracking of good and scrap materials.
- Record scrap rolls and provide necessary documentation to the Operations Manager for proper tracking.
- Change mat numbers in the system and manage roll-related data efficiently.
Skein Management & Slitter Operation:
- Manage skein at the end of a mat by jumping slitter blades and ensuring product quality.
- Record the length of the roll once all material is wound, managing the transition between mats.
- Handle skein scrap appropriately and update the system with the correct weight and product data.
Safety & Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and ensure safe operation of all machinery and equipment.
- Follow industry standards and company procedures for handling materials, equipment, and waste.
- Ensure that all activities comply with environmental, health, and safety regulations.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Experience: Previous experience in manufacturing, production, or a related field is preferred.
- Technical Skills: Ability to read and interpret production data, operate complex machinery, and set up equipment to meet specific needs.
- Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail when setting equipment, capturing measurements, and labeling materials.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot issues related to winding, material tension, and slitting.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to lift, move, and stage rolls, cores, and materials, often requiring lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Communication Skills: Strong communication skills for reporting issues and collaborating with other team members and departments.
- Safety Conscious: Must follow strict safety protocols and ensure safe practices during the operation of all machinery.
