Schedule: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm
Location: 4000-A Glenside Dr, Richmond, VA 23228
Pay Range: $24-27 per hour
SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES:
Provides information for patient diagnosis and treatment by performing laboratory tests in chemistry and hematology.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Knowledge of billing/coding for lab procedures
- Obtains blood specimens by performing venipunctures and fingerstick to patients.
- Collect appropriate laboratory specimens according to the testing ordered
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, observing isolation procedures.
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing the information with nursing station log, bringing discrepancies to the attention of clinical personnel.
- Verifies patient by reading patient identification.
- Collects therapeutic drug-monitoring assays by collaborating with lab personnel to ensure appropriate drug dose to collection time.
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed.
- Can appropriately document using the LIS system all specimens collected and appropriately order the testing according to the requisition from the ordering physician.
- Recognizes system failures, and inconsistent or erroneous patients results, and reports these along with unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, MAS, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; maintaining unresolved orders.
- Handles the quality control material appropriately and responds to out of range results in an appropriate manner.
- Enhances the phlebotomy department's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
- Organizes work by matching computer orders with specimen labeling; sorting specimens; checking labeling; logging specimens; arranging reports for delivery; keeping work surfaces clean and orderly
- Document corrective actions associated with QC, QA, instrument and proficiency testing.
- Knows and uses proper reporting systems (including panic results). Understands and utilizes the LIS to ensure that the physician receives all reports and that all panic reports are relayed without delay.
- Maintains quality results by running standards and controls, verifying equipment function through routine equipment maintenance and advanced trouble shooting; calibrating equipment utilizing approved testing procedures; monitoring quality control measures and protocols
- Serves as technical resource by participating in staff training; answering questions of other professionals; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
- Identifies and communicates abnormal patient conditions by alerting supervisory personnel, the pathologist, the patient physician, or nurse, reporting mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials
- Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating chemistry equipment, performing hand chemistries
- Provides test results for patient diagnosis and treatment by operating hematology, urinalysis, and coagulation equipment, performing manual methods of differentials
- Contributes to a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, physicians and co-workers by following established standards and procedures, complying with legal regulations
- Maintains patient confidence by keeping laboratory information confidential
- Understands the operational procedures for all analyzers and does patient testing properly as well as maintaining procedures as required for all instrumentation in use.
- Adheres to professional standards, clinic policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements
- Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- One of the following is required:
- Associates Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician
- Associates Degree in Applied Sciences
- Bachelors Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry with two years of lab experience
- ASCP Certification or similarly situated organizations preferred
- Skillful and knowledgeable in all aspects related to lab (chemistry, immunoassay, hematology, and urinalysis)
- Phlebotomy experience preferred but not required

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The position requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and finger use. Pushing and pulling are occasionally required. Use of a computer, keyboard, and telephone along with various office machines is an essential part of the job.
