What are we looking for in a Peer Support Counselor?

Peer Support Counselors use their own experiences with behavioral health issues, treatment, and recovery to encourage and support clients as they progress through their own recovery steps. Peer Support Counselors promote socialization and self-advocacy, assist with developing a natural support system, and work with clients to develop & maintain community living skills. As part of this process, Peer Support Counselors will participate in scheduled and routine activities to assist clients in developing the skills and confidence to exercise control over their own lives. For this particular position, the Peer Support Counselor will outreach to individuals with serious mental illness who are experiencing homelessness or are risk of homelessness, with the goal of building rapport and engaging individuals in services. The Peer Support Counselor will work closely with crisis stabilization centers, managed care organizations, and other community providers to develop a relationship with the local crisis systems that allows for effective support of individuals in need. This position requires an effective & empathetic communicator who is able to develop & maintain positive relationships with people who may be in distress or are experiencing multiple challenges. The Peer Support Counselor will spend much of their time providing outreach and support in the community, so being comfortable working independently is essential in this role. The schedule for this position is Tuesday-Saturday 8am-5pm.

Peer Support Counselor duties may include:

  • conducting community outreach to seek out individuals in the community who are experiencing serious mental illness and homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless
  • building rapport with community contacts to encourage treatment and provide support & reassurance to maintain engagement with services
  • sharing personal experiences of recovery, as appropriate, to build motivation and encourage clients in their treatment
  • partnering with clients to advocate for their needs & desires throughout treatment
  • modeling ways to engage with others to increase social supports, develop meaningful relationships, and access & navigate community resources
  • collaborating with each client in the development and implementation of individualized treatment plans and self-directed recovery action plans
  • assessing clients for safety and risk to self or others, and taking appropriate crisis intervention measures when indicated

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be a self-identified consumer of mental health services in stable recovery for at least one year
