The Point of Care Testing Coordinator (POCC) is responsible for day to day operations and maintenance of the Point of Care Testing program at Premier Health Facilities. The POCC provides administrative, technical, and educational support to Premier Health nursing units and clinics to ensure effective point of care testing (POCT) and ensures regulatory compliance with CAP, CLIA, COLA, etc. The POCC works in conjunction with his/her system counterparts and laboratory management to ensure coordination of efforts with other Premier Laboratories.

Positions Summary:
The Point of Care Testing Coordinator (POCC) is responsible for day to day operations and maintenance of the Point of Care Testing program at Premier Health Facilities. The POCC provides administrative, technical, and educational support to Premier Health nursing units and clinics to ensure effective point of care testing (POCT) and ensures regulatory compliance with CAP, CLIA, COLA, etc. The POCC works in conjunction with his/her system counterparts and laboratory management to ensure coordination of efforts with other Premier Laboratories.
Responsibilities:
- Manage, in conjunction with the other point of care coordinators, the point of care testing program for a large multi-site hospital system for waived and non-waived testing.
- Cover designated locations and at times provide coverage to other locations when needed.
- Work with other Point of Care Testing Coordinators, Medical Directors, Laboratory and Hospital leaders to coordinate the point of care program system wide.
- Ensure regulatory compliance is maintained by reviewing all regulations on a regular basis to confirm the facility meets the standards, working with Premier Health Compliance as necessary.
- Monitor compliance with policies and procedures via visits to units. Provide monthly feedback to end users and hospital leaders.
- Prepare and review training/orientation and annual competency assessment material for all POCT test systems.
- Coordinate with nursing and medical education to facilitate training/orientation and competency assessment as required.
- Maintain database of current education, training/orientation and competency assessment records for Premier Health non-lab testing personnel.
- Review as required and maintain quality control records. Alert appropriate staff member concerning non-compliance issues.
- Work with hospital suppliers for appropriate ordering, usage and inventory within POCT areas. Ensure supply costs are tracked to the appropriate department.
- Ensure new reagents and test kits are appropriately quality controlled before being used by POCT areas.
- Work with vendors, BioMed, IT, tech support and unit managers to coordinate instrument repair and replacement when indicated, validation of new testing or instruments.
- Work with IT personnel to coordinate the installation of new or relocated POCT instrumentation, installation/software upgrades and maintenance of POCT laboratory information systems.
- Monitor maintenance and troubleshooting of equipment and instruments. Assist in providing technical support to Premier Health staff for all point of care tests.
- Evaluate and select new procedures, equipment and instrumentation in conjunction with Medical Directors, Assistant Director of Technical Services, hospital and laboratory leaders. Perform validation studies as required.
- Develop, prepare and modify policies, procedures and testing protocol for area in conjunction with the Pathologist, Assistant Director of Technical Services and appropriate Premier Health staff.
- Maintain knowledge of databases used for the system POCT program and reporting of point of care results to the patient’s EMR. Maintenance of each data base, update users, create reports to review quality control and statistics of patient results and errors.
- Prepare monthly and other requested reports pertinent for POC.
- Maintain professional growth by participating in educational programs, professional organizations and activities to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments.
- Complies with all safety, compliance and human resources policies of CompuNet Clinical Laboratories.
- Serve on the Premier Health POCT committee. Represent CompuNet through interactions with various groups within Premier Health as assigned. Prepare reports requested for these groups.
- Perform other responsibilities associated with point of care testing.
- Performs other responsibilities outside of point of care testing, as requested by laboratory leaders, in order to meet the needs of the laboratory system. These responsibilities may be short term or permanent dependent upon the situation.
- Assists, as needed, with other duties and departmental projects.
- Must have an associate degree in medical laboratory technology, medical laboratory science or clinical laboratory science and at least 4 years of experience or a bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science or equivalent and at least 2 years experience and qualify to be a technical consultant under CAP regulations. ASCP certification is required.
- Must have demonstrated proficiency in testing functions and training abilities.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills needed to work with both laboratory, hospital employees, management and pathologists
- Computer skills are necessary.
- Ability to work independently, sound reasoning to make decisions and organize and prioritize work.
- Scheduling flexibility is often required, including outside regular business hours and weekends, for staff training and the troubleshooting of instrumentation. Travel to other sites is required.
