Job Summary:
The Datacenter Hands and Feet Technician is responsible for providing on-site support for the bank’s datacenter infrastructure. This role involves physical installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and support for servers, storage devices, networking equipment, and other critical IT assets. The technician acts as the remote hands for the bank’s IT operations team, ensuring optimal uptime and system performance while adhering to regulatory compliance standards. Additionally, this role involves the collection and submission of artifacts for monthly auditing to ensure adherence to banking compliance, security policies, and operational efficiency.
Technical Skills:
- Perform rack and stack of servers, network devices, and storage equipment.
- Install, remove, and replace hardware components such as hard drives, memory, power supplies, and network cables.
- Label, trace, and document cable connections (Ethernet, Fiber, Power).
- Conduct physical checks on hardware for faults, amber warning lights, overheating, and power failures.
- Perform basic diagnostics and troubleshooting under guidance from IT teams.
- Replace faulty components such as fans, power supplies, and network cards.
- Patch and terminate Ethernet and Fiber cables based on network team instructions.
- Test network connections using tools such as cable testers and loopback plugs.
- Assist in reconfiguring network devices physically when required.
- Conduct regular datacenter walk-throughs to check for alerts, alarms, or environmental issues.
- Ensure proper airflow and cooling by monitoring rack layouts and equipment placement.
- Work with vendors and on-site teams to perform hardware maintenance and repairs.
- Follow the bank’s security policies for datacenter access control and device handling.
- Maintain audit logs of equipment installations, removals, and changes.
- Provide artifacts for monthly auditing, including: Access logs (who entered the datacenter and for what purpose).Hardware change records (installation/removal logs)
- Cable management documentation (updated diagrams and connectivity details)
- Incident reports (hardware failures, troubleshooting steps, resolutions)
- Temperature and power usage logs (ensuring compliance with operational standards)
- Ensure compliance with financial and data protection regulations (e.g., PCI-DSS, SOX, GDPR, FFIEC).
- Knowledge of server hardware, storage systems, and network devices.
- Ability to work with hardware vendors (HPE, Dell, Cisco, NetApp, etc.).
- Experience with structured cabling (Ethernet, Fiber, Patch Panels, etc.).
- Familiarity with basic networking concepts (IP addressing, VLANs, DNS, DHCP).
Soft Skills:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and procedures.
- Good communication skills to interact with remote IT teams and vendors.
Work Conditions:
- Requires on-site presence in the datacenter during shifts.
- May involve 24/7 shift rotation, on-call duties, or weekend work for urgent tasks.
- Physical demands include lifting equipment (up to 50 lbs), working in confined spaces, and handling cables.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree or certification in IT, Networking, or Data Center Operations (preferred).
- 7-10 years of experience in a datacenter or IT support role.
