Job Summary :

Under general supervision, the Field Operations Contractor - Meter Specialist is responsible for locating and reading electric and water meters, performing routine maintenance, and assisting with the installation, removal, testing, and repair of meters and related equipment. This role involves a combination of outdoor work, physical labor, and customer service, requiring accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Meter Reading & Data Entry :
  • Read electric and water meters and enter readings, conditions, and exception codes into handheld field computers.
  • Identify irregularities such as dead meters, illegal use, leaks, unsafe conditions, and incorrect rates.
  • Perform data entry of meter readings into a laptop or handheld device.
  • Customer Interaction :
  • Respond to customer questions regarding electric and water services, meter readings, and consumption.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with customers to gain access to meters when necessary.
  • Maintenance & Inspections :
  • Remove dirt and grass from water meter boxes to obtain readings.
  • Inspect meters and identify broken seals, upside-down meters, and other issues.
  • Maintain tools and equipment, including vehicles, in a clean and serviceable condition.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on the assigned vehicle daily.
  • Physical Work :
  • Perform outdoor work in inclement weather and work up to 8 hours a day.
  • Walk up to 10 miles per day and handle heavy equipment (e.g., 30lb water meter covers).
  • Perform repetitive physical tasks such as bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and kneeling.
  • Driving :
  • Operate a Client vehicle (e.g., light-duty pick-up, F-150 or similar) for daily routes and meter readings.
  • Drive within designated service areas and ensure safe vehicle operation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Knowledge :

  • Working knowledge of client rules and regulations related to water and electricity services, including usage, consumption, and customer policies.
  • Basic knowledge of electric and water distribution methods and metering devices.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and general vehicle maintenance.
  • Skills :

  • Mental alertness, motor coordination, and accuracy.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a company vehicle safely.
  • Abilities :

  • Accurately read meters and transfer readings accurately into devices.
  • Identify irregularities and potential hazards (e.g., broken seals, leaks).
  • Communicate effectively with the public in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Work independently, follow instructions, and utilize city maps and street guides.
  • Perform physical tasks, including lifting and walking for extended periods.
  • Required Qualifications :

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Corrected vision of at least 20 / 40.
  • Preferred Qualifications (if any) :

  • Journeyman work experience in utility meters (gas, electric, water, cable, communications).
  • Experience as a utility service worker or manual laborer.
  • Meter reading experience for water, electric, or gas utilities.
  • Customer service and service technician experience.
  • 12 months of professional driving experience and route driving experience.
  • Familiarity with electric and water utility systems.
  • Work Environment & Physical Requirements :

  • Work Schedule : 8-hour workdays that include outdoor work in various weather conditions.
  • Physical Demands : Repetitive bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, kneeling, and lifting up to 30 lbs.
  • Driving : Daily driving required, operating a light-duty vehicle (F-150 or similar).
  • Customer Service : Occasional customer interactions for access to meters and resolving issues.
  • Education : High School
