The Training Director is responsible for directing and advising the Training Department. The Training Director should ensure that all training is carried out in support of the needs of law enforcement agencies across the nation and the needs of the membership of C.O.P.S. These trainings include the signature Traumas of Law Enforcement trainings, the C.O.P.S. National Conference on Law Enforcement Wellness and Trauma, in person and virtual training sessions for law enforcement, survivors and C.O.P.S. Chapters, and training presented by C.O.P.S. at outside law enforcement conferences.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide direction to the Training Department staff to complete and carry out all logistics for all C.O.P.S. trainings.
  • Develop training curriculum for courses for law enforcement officers, law enforcement and chapter leaders and law enforcement survivors.
  • Serve on the C.O.P.S. National Board Training Committee.
  • Collect requests and recommendations for training locations and create proposals for the National Board to review and select the future year’s training locations.
  • Contract facility, meeting space, keynote speakers, presenters, and transportation for National Conference on Law Enforcement Wellness and Trauma.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach Department to market trainings and conferences (brochures, flyers, social media, etc.) and ensure all website information is up to date.
  • Collaborate with the Outreach Department to review sponsors and in-kind donations making sure proper recognition is given at all training and conferences.
  • Supervise training staff members and ensure all tasks related to training are completed professionally and accurately.
  • Approve and edit all training correspondence to participants, presenters, volunteers, etc. (confirmations, contracts, presenter logistics, attendee packet, etc.).
  • Ensure C.O.P.S. procurement policy and Federal grant requirements are met for all training.
  • Oversee the participation of the organization in outside law enforcement conferences.
  • Present instruction for as long as 90 minutes in length from established curriculum.
  • Evaluate feedback and suggestions from the previous training year to ensure training needs are always being met.
  • Submit a bi-annual training report to the National Board.
  • Research training topics pertinent to law enforcement survivors.
  • Host virtual training sessions for law enforcement and survivors.
  • Review requests for individual training and coordinate/facilitate as needed.

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

  • Frequent out of town travel to C.O.P.S. functions for trainings, conferences, or other C.O.P.S. events when needed.
  • Assist other Departments on projects when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position supervises the Training Department which includes the following positions: Training Manager and Training Coordinator.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:

High school diploma required, four (4) year Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of one (1) year of training and/or event planning and two (2) years office experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google platform and Windows. Instructor certifications/experience preferred.

SKILLS:

  • Problem Solving and Reasoning Ability: Ability to resolve problems in a timely manner and deal with a variety of situations where organization is required. Develop alternative solutions. Manage a variety of situations where only limited instruction is offered.
  • Language Skills: Persuasive writing and strong verbal communications. Ability to speak effectively in person and on the phone to convey appropriate C.O.P.S image to callers and visitors.
  • Customer Service Skills: Manage difficult or emotional situations. Respond promptly to inquiries and needs of others. Respond to requests for service and assistance. Meet commitments.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Computer Literacy: General knowledge of computers and software is necessary, including word processing, spreadsheets, e-mail, and database.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to interact at the executive level.
  • Public Speaking: Ability to facilitate a course of instruction or introduce speakers at training conferences

RESIDENCE REQUIREMENTS: This is an in-person position, located at the National C.O.P.S. office in Camdenton, Missouri and a successful applicant must currently reside near or be willing to relocate to within a daily driving distance from the office.
