ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating school health program goals, objectives and procedures in cooperation with school personnel and community resources.
- Participates in developing strategies, as needed, to eliminate or minimize health problems of students that may interfere with learning.
- Participates in identifying and reporting environmental health and safety hazards (current and potential for students and staff).
- Initiates, maintains, and annually reviews student health records (pupil health record immunization record, and reports of physical examination).
- Maintains daily, monthly, and yearly statistical information regarding health status of students and staff and utilization of school health services programs.
- Supervises paraprofessionals assigned health services duties in individual buildings.
- Assists with training and education of paraprofessionals in proper techniques for medical treatments or procedures.
- Identifies health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.
- Implements all vision and scoliosis screening programs mandates by Indiana law, plus vision screening of all 5th graders and new students, and scoliosis screening of all 6th and 8th graders.
- Communicates current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate school staff.
- Develops individualized health plans with specific goals, objectives, and interventions, based on student health needs, as indicated. (May be informal plans, outlined in student’s individual health folder)
- Assists in identification of students with disabilities, interpreting health factors pertinent to the student’s disability; and develops, implements, and evaluates the health component of the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP).
- Develops and maintains a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
- Administers medications and treatments to students per physician’s order and parent authorization.
- Provides health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
- Assists students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
- Facilitates the attainment of students’ health needs by providing support to students and their families.
- Provides educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self-care skills to deal with health problems.
- Provides consultation and assistance to teachers in their planning, implementation, and evaluations of health education units.
- Serves on Student Assistance team to assist in planning and implementing strategies developed to aid students and their families.
- Provides in-service education opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
- Collaborates with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs, current and potential, of children and youth to facilitate school and community planning and intervention.
- Critiques and utilizes current research in school, child, and family health and participates in health and educational research as appropriate.
- Assumes responsibility for personal professional development.
- Appropriate certification as required by the Indiana Department of Education.
- Licensed registered nurse.
- Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with groups of students and parents.
- Skills in human relations.
- Ability to plan and organize; good work habits.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, teachers, and school staff.
