JOB TITLE: Transportation Director

TYPE OF POSITION: Administrator

REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent


POSITION PURPOSE: Formulates policies, programs and procedures for the transportation system, including schedules, routes, assignment of drivers and vehicles and other terminal operations for the school district.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.

  • Provides conformity with all state laws and regulations regarding school transportation.

  • Maintain safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations and develop a program of preventive safety.

  • Recruit, train and supervise all transportation personnel and make recommendations on their employment, transfer, promotion and release.

  • Conduct annual evaluations with staff to highlight their strengths and collaborate on goal setting for areas of improvement.

  • Establish clear and achievable goals for staff to encourage productivity and development.

  • Foster and sustain a collaborative work culture that prioritizes the needs of students above all.

  • Conduct regular department meetings to ensure clear communication and alignment on goals and priorities.

  • Facilitate annual training sessions and create relevant professional development materials

  • Organize the administration of quarterly random drug screenings for employees that hold a CDL.

  • Advise Superintendent on road hazards for decision on school closing during inclement weather.

  • Collaborate with building principals and other supervisors responsible for planning special school trips.

  • Develop, maintain and administer a transportation program to meet all the requirements of the daily instructional program and extracurricular activities.

  • Prepare, maintain and modify as necessary all bus routes and schedules at each school.

  • Regularly review routes, to ensure they are being operated efficiently and safely.

  • Prepare accident reports for submission to the State Police in the event of a traffic incident, and assess whether further actions, such as a drug screening, suspension, or termination, are necessary.

  • Submit all reports as required by local and state authorities.

  • Assess, approve and maintain records on maintenance of the vehicles in the fleet.

  • Approve and forward transportation service invoices to the Business Department.

  • Oversee the maintenance and inventory of all district-owned equipment and parts.

  • Work with the Assistant Director of Transportation to receive and approve time off requests and payroll on a weekly basis.

  • Seek and assign substitute staff when applicable.

  • Prepare and submit insurance reports as required.

  • Attend appropriate inservice meetings and transportation conferences.

  • Assist the Assistant Superintendent with bus specifications.

  • Authorize purchases in accordance with budgetary limitations.

  • Take an active approach in addressing discipline issues on school buses, including reviewing and sharing bus video footage when needed.

  • Serve as a liaison with parents for complaints and special requests, ensuring that all concerns are investigated, addressed and resolved.

  • Develop recommendations for future equipment, personnel and transportation needs based on an assessment of resident students, distances, grade levels, etc.

  • Collaborate with Special Needs and Young Adult Programs to ensure students with disabilities receive the necessary accommodations and equipment for their safety.

  • Coordinate wash bay and bus bay usage.

  • Carry out other duties in respect to transportation as directed by the Assistant Superintendent.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises employees in the transportation department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma.

  • One-year certificate from college or technical school or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with groups of students and parents.

  • Skills in human relations.

  • Ability to plan and organize; good work habits.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations requiring decision-making.

  • Possess a working knowledge of school district and boundaries.

  • Other qualifications that the School Board may require.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may also have to exert up to fifty (50) pounds or force occasionally.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
