Summary

Under the general supervision of the director and/or Coding Manager, the Educator is responsible for provider and coder documentation review and education.. This includes, but is not limited to conducting focused documentation review to identify documentation improvement opportunities and validate correct coding. The Educator provides feedback to physician and non-physician staff on appropriate documentation and correct coding.. The Educator’s responsibilities also include formal and informal education on various coding topics and code changes to ensure Compliance and coding guidelines are followed. Performs other various coding duties/special projects as assigned.

Education

Associate’s Degree or equivalent.

Certification, Registration, and Licensure

Certification required: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) and/or Certified Professional Coder -Hospital (COC or AHIMA CCA, CCS-P. Audit and Specialty Certification preferred (Certified Professional Medical Auditor –CPMA, Certified E/M Coder – CEMC, other.)

Experience

Associates degree or equivalent with 5 years recent coding experience Demonstrated proficiency in E/M code assignment, auditing and education. Thorough knowledge Local and federal coverage determinations, ICD-10 diagnosis, procedures CPT and HCPCS, coding guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Works collaboratively with Coding Management team to develop annual Coding Audit and Education plan.

Performs focused and random audits, documents results and gives feedback to coders and providers.

  • Uses data to identify trends, documentation and coding errors and areas of opportunity for compliance and other best practices.
  • Provides education to the coders and providers (eg. CMS guidelines, annual code changes, coverage, denials, etc)
  • Provides documentation and coding support to coding team and providers; covers coding production as needed. Works with management to create/maintain coding education materials.
  • Acts as a conduit for department education and organizational communication among staff and others. Acts as a subject matter expert for systems and coding content
  • Works with department and interdepartmental teams to support professional coding operations and CHMG/Revenue Management
  • Participates in and supports departmental and organizational change.
  • Ensures compliance with State, Local, Federal regulatory requirements.
  • Takes responsibility for individual performance goals and special projects as assigned.
  • Meet all departmental, professional and technical requirements. Technically proficient in all coding related systems. Assists coder/provider in coding related systems.
