Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher in tephrochronology-volcanology data management and end-user engagement to join the team working on the FAIR Data Communities – Tephra Information Portal (TIP) project. This NSF-funded endeavor is led by PIs S. Kuehn (Concord University), K. Lehnert (Columbia University), and A. Kurbatov (University of Maine). The full-time postdoc position will be based at Concord University and will extend for 27 months with anticipated start and end dates of 1-June-2025 and 30-August-2027.
Major responsibilities will include preparing and managing tephra data and associated rich metadata for repository ingest, assisting with data preparation and ingest by project partners, facilitating end-user testing of software tools and interfaces, connecting with the tephra research community at major conferences including IAVCEI 2025, preparing training materials, organizing and facilitating workshops, mentoring two undergraduate student research assistants, and contributing to publication and other dissemination of project outputs.
Duties and Responsibilities

- Work collaboratively with project partners, both scientists and software developers, from multiple institutions in the U.S., Canada, and Europe
- Compile and prepare Concord tephra lab data and metadata for StraboSpot, SESAR, and EarthChem submission
- Assist in testing software tools and user interfaces developed by other team members and suggest improvements
- Assist in organizing, managing, and conducting tephra research community outreach and engagement activities, for example workshops and social media
- Regularly participate in team meetings
- Mentor and supervise undergraduate student assistants
- Prepare abstracts and presentations and present at professional conferences
- Prepare documentation and training materials, including videos
- Provide data curation support and training for end-users in collaboration with ot
- Gather, synthesize, and report on end-user feedback and project success metrics

Doctorate
Required Licenses/Certification
Recently-earned Ph.D. (past 5 years preferred) in earth sciences, data science, or a related field – Or exceptional M.S. candidates with relevant work experience.

- Research experience in tephrochronology, volcanology, or igneous petrology ideally including both field and laboratory components
- Analytical laboratory experience, e.g. EPMA, LA-ICP-MS, SIMS
- Experience managing research sample collections
- Familiarity with data discovery, data analysis, statistical techniques, and related software
- General understanding of data integrity, data quality, and data provenance issues
- Proficiency in multiple languages
Required Skills
- Effective English communication and writing skills will be essential
- Candidates must be able to work independently as well as collaborate with widely-dispersed team members.
- Prior experience working with pyroclastic volcanic deposits in the field and laboratory is strongly preferred.
- Experience managing scientific data
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing
- Ability to work both individually and on a team
