The WINGS & First Gen Coordinator will play a key role in preparing the new incoming class of undergraduate students as they transition into college. This position will be responsible for faculty and staff to develop programming to prepare students for the academic year. In addition, the WINGS & First Gen Coordinator will assist students in monthly programming and student mentoring. Events will be created to support students in their academic and professional development.
Office Profile: The U.S. Department of Education's Developing Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Program awarded Concordia University Irvine a $3 million grant. Concordia's grant-winning initiative is titled "Avanzando: Access and Success" and will enhance support services for undergraduate Hispanic students. The HSI grant will help Concordia meet the needs of its growing Hispanic population. Concordia is committed to advancing access and success for all students, and to supporting all students' overall well-being as the university seeks to help them develop as wise, honorable, cultivated citizens.
Role: This role advises a cohort of traditional undergraduate students. Particularly this position oversees the WINGS program. The WINGS program is a two-year program dedicated to the education and support of distinguished students who have been invited to participate as a condition of their enrollment. This position also works with the evaluation of retention efforts for first generation college students, and will also oversee the resources of the Unity Center. All activities of this position are to make a contribution to the fulfillment of the mission of the university.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Include the following:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to accomplish each of the below duties satisfactorily:
DHSI Grant Initiatives Pertaining to the WINGS Program, First Generation Program, and Club Advisement
- Implement and execute HSI grant initiatives for Concordia's WINGS Program, and First Gen Program.
- Plan and execute the Summer Bridge program under the direction of the WINGS Program Director.
- Recruitment and hiring of Student Success Mentors and First Gen Mentors
- On board training for both group of student leaders
- Develop a strategic plan to help develop the two group of student leaders throughout the semester
- Plan and oversee all activities related to the WINGS Program throughout the academic semester
- Plan and oversee all activities related to the first generation students population throughout the academic year
- Knowledge of the Hispanic community and best practices to develop students academic and professionally.
- Serve as staff club advisor to student club, Nuestro Voz.
- Evaluate and strategize retention and graduation efforts for Wings, Hispanic, and First Gen students - programs, resources, and reporting of effectiveness.
- Oversee resource management of the Unity Center
- Participate in recommended professional activities to enhance skills and abilities.
- Participate in professional organizations' functions which may include attending workshops and conferences.
- Supervise student workers as needed.
- Duties require day and occasional evening and weekend hours.
- Perform other duties as assigned to insure the success of the program on behalf of the university, its students and alumni.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university required. Master's degree preferred.
- Minimum 1-3 years of experience in student life coordination, enrollment management or academic advising at a college level or related experience.
- Minimum 1-3 years academic coaching with students who struggle academically or experience working with at-risk students or managing academic support programs
Notice: This is a new position funded by the HSI grant (Avanzando: Access & Success; 2022 HSI Grant). It is a one-year position, using carry over funds from our year one grant budget. Funding for this position will be reviewed on a year to year basis.
