Position Purpose:
The Assistant Safety and Security Manager supports the Director of Campus Safety and Security with implementing and managing a comprehensive campus safety and security program. This role involves assisting with emergency preparedness, compliance, training, and day-to-day security operations to ensure a safe environment for students, staff, faculty, and visitors.
Responsibilities:
- Support Leadership and Coordination
- Assist in leading the CUNE Critical Incident Management Team (CIMT) during emergencies and preparedness activities.
- Support the activation and management of the CUNEAlert system as needed.
- Provide back-up leadership in the absence of the Director of Campus Safety and Security.
- Manage Security Officers
- Support, lead, and direct a team of security officers ensuring staff coverage and work shifts
- Provides performance management, coaching, and addressing items as they arise
- Works directly with Director of Campus Safety and Security on all personnel related matters, including budget and workloads
- Program Support and Implementation
- Help develop and implement campus-wide safety and security programs.
- Assist with risk assessments, incident response strategies, and emergency preparedness initiatives.
- Coordinate and support programs focused on crime prevention, emergency response, fire safety, and general campus security.
- Training and Education
- Assist in developing and delivering security-related training sessions, drills, and workshops.
- Maintain training schedules and records under the direction of the Director.
- Help facilitate campus-wide safety awareness programs.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with University departments, including Buildings and Grounds, Student Affairs, and Human Resources, to address safety concerns and implement security initiatives.
- Maintain open communication channels with faculty, staff, students, and external agencies to provide timely updates and information.
- Compliance and Reporting
- Assist in ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including the Clery Act and Title IX.
- Contribute to the preparation and submission of safety reports, including the Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
- Maintain records of incidents, audits, investigations, and corrective actions.
- Emergency Preparedness and Response
- Support the Director in providing leadership during campus emergencies.
- Participate in audits and surveillance activities to assess and enhance safety protocols.
- Assist in updating procedures and training modules to adapt to current conditions.
- Operational Oversight
- Collaborate with CUNE Building/Facilities Managers to ensure adherence to safety standards and operations.
- Monitor campus facilities and report safety hazards or concerns to appropriate departments.
- Assist in developing budgets for security programs and tracking resources for training and operations.
- Health and Safety Collaboration
- Work with Student Health Services to support health-related safety protocols, including those for public health risks.
- Other Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the university’s safety and security objectives.
Qualifications:
Education-
- High school diploma required.
- Degree or experience in criminal justice/law enforcement preferred.
Experience-
- Prior experience in security processes/procedures, safety/emergency response, and security management required.
- Ability to document security incidents, prepare reports, and general organizational skills.
- Familiarity with Federal, State safety regulations and Title IX and the Clery Act.
Certifications-
- Certified in First Aid and CPR.
- Any credential applicable to security is considered a positive.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Specialized Knowledge-
- Basic computer knowledge of office software.
- Basic electrical and surveillance technology knowledge.
Proficiencies-
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Creative problem-solving skills.
- Ability to lead and direct others while providing a positive example.
- Ability to accept responsibility for the supervision of security staff.
- Proficiency in using security and communication tools (e.g. radios, reporting software).
- Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
Special Position Requirements:
- Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
- Ability to understand and follow directions as given and work independently.
- Ability to walk for 30 – 45 minutes per hour during an eight-hour shift.
- Ability to climb up to three flights of stairs at a time.
- Ability to withstand outdoor weather conditions throughout the year.
- Vision correctable to 20/20 required.
- Hearing correctable within a normal range.

Work Conditions:
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises.
- Considerable physical activity requires heavy physical work, heavy lifting, pushing, and pulling required up to 25 pounds. Physical work is part of this job.
- Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks that require following basic safety precautions.
