Job Description
Location : New York, NY
The Assistant Photo Editor is responsible for photo research and licensing, preparing photos for publication on the Web site and social-media platforms, and some assigning of photography. This Guild position reports to ’s Deputy Photo Director.
Responsibilities :
Research, edit, and license images to complement newyorker.com’s stories.
Prepare photos, captions, and credits for publication on newyorker.com, the weekly magazine, and social-media platforms.
Create composites when necessary for Web and social platforms.
Commission original photography as may be required for newyorker.com.
Work with photographers, agencies, vendors, and the company’s licensing and business departments to create budgets, expedite contracts, and process invoices in a timely manner.
Monitor other editorial outlets to have a wide-ranging awareness of published news photography and portraiture.
Research, edit, license, and commission images for the New Yorker Festival and other magazine events.
Research and pitch ideas for newyorker.com’s photo blog, Photo Booth.
Contribute to photographer databases.
Fulfill some administrative duties, such as preparing photos for contests, sending out magazines to contributors, and ordering supplies.
Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.
Skills and Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of photography, great Photoshop skills, and a general familiarity with photo rights.
Excellent organizational skills and confidence working on multiple projects with tight deadlines.
Knowledge of and interest in the topics covered on newyorker.com, including news, politics, culture, and humor.
Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
The expected base salary range for this position is from $65,000 - $70,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
