TITLE: Technician (Fire/Fuels) Helitack – 1 or more Contract Positions
LOCATION: Forestry-Division of Fire
SALARY: $16.95 per hour including benefits
CLOSING DATE: Monday, May 5, 2025 at 5:30 p.m.
DUTIES:
- Serve as a skilled crewmember on fuels reduction treatments.
- Provide guidance to Forestry Aides in fuels work implementation.
- Felling of small trees using a chainsaw.
- Hand pile woody debris.
- Construct control lines for prescribed burns.
- Serve as a skilled crewmember in prescribed fire implementation.
- Mop-up prescribed burns.
- Patrol prescribed burns.
- Sleep in remote areas on fuels projects if warranted.
- Monitor fuels reduction treatments.
- May operate 4×4 pickups and other light vehicles.
- Work long hours including holidays and weekends conducting fuels projects on the Flathead Indian Reservation.
- Clean, maintain, recondition, and store hand and power tools and equipment.
- Travel off reservation to support local, regional or national fuels reduction efforts
Wildfire suppression:
- Serve as a skilled crew member on an engine, fire suppression module or helitack crew.
- Provide instruction to Forestry Aides in fire suppression.
- Utilize a variety of specialized tools, equipment, and techniques while actively working with hand and power tools
such as a shovel, axe, pulaski, chainsaw, in fire suppression.
- Serve as a skilled supervisor crewmember suppressing wildfire.
- Cut saw line using a chainsaw.
- Build containment line on wildfires.
- Mop-up wildfires.
- Patrol wildfires.
- Sleep in remote areas while on fire suppression.
- Serve as a skilled crewmember assigned to carry out specialized assignments such as tree falling, backfire or
burnout, mobile and stationary engine attack, construction of helispots, specialized helitack operations, and longline
hookups.
- May operate 4×4 pickups and other light vehicles.
- Work long hours including holidays and weekends suppressing fires on the Flathead Indian Reservation.
- Assigned to fire lookout duties to provide detection and reporting of wildfires. Reports smoke and fire to a dispatcher
giving location, estimated size, and other pertinent information. Reports weather and fire behavior information
keeping the dispatcher and/or other officials informed of current conditions.
- Clean, maintain, recondition, and store hand and power tools and equipment.
- Travel off reservation to support local, regional or national fire suppression efforts.
Common duties:
- Participates in safety training in the techniques, practices, methods of fire suppression and fuels treatments in a safe
manner.
- Participate in Safety Tailgate sessions and After Action Reviews (AAR). Ensures own and others’ safety in all aspects
of assignments.
- Receive specialized training to include but not limited to CPR/First Aid, Defensive driving, and sexual harassment.
- Assist with inventories of supplies and equipment.
- Services and makes minor repairs to engines and crew vehicles.
- Assigned to other management activities which include, but are not limited to: maintaining campground facilities;
mowing of grass and weeds; trail maintenance; building and lookout maintenance; road clearing; removal and
disposal of hazard trees (i.e. timber felling, thinning and slashing; hand slashing; hand piling; wood chipper
operations); collections and distribution of firewood; and, like duties.
- Assists fire prevention officials with area patrols and fire detection activities. Assists with fire education activities as
assigned.
- Assist with all risk incident support activities to include hazmat, search and rescue, etc.
- Assist with other forestry related activities as needed.
- Performs other duties assigned.
MINIMUM RECRUITING QUALIFICATIONS AS REFLECTED ON TRIBAL EMPLOYMENT
APPLICATION:
- A high school diploma (or equivalent).
- At a minimum for Technician, two (2) seasons in fire/fuels related work.
- FFT2 qualified.
- Faller 3 (FAL3) qualified.
- Incumbent is subject to annual medical examination and work capacity test for arduous positions. Incumbent must
pass both to meet the standards of the Technician position.
- This is a testing designated position (TDP) under
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS (AS DETERMINED BY THE INTERVIEW):
- Ability to successfully complete NWCG developmental training to include but not limited to S-131, S-290 and L-280.
- Ability to perform duties under stressful and adverse operating conditions, such as long work hours, heavy workloads,
emergency situations, adverse working conditions and environmental conditions.
- Ability to communicate effectively and follow oral/written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees within a diverse workforce.
