Community Cultural Advisor

Behavioral Health

Hourly Wage: $20.10/Regular/Full-Time


The Cultural Advisor is responsible for providing guidance on cultural matters, fostering an inclusive environment, and enhancing cultural competency within the organization. This role involves collaborating with various teams to implement culturally responsive practices and initiatives. This position will assist program staff, evaluation staff, families, youth, contractors, and all other system partners in ensuring activities of grant are culturally competent and community based. They are responsible for empowering community involvement in all aspects of planning and development of a cultural model. This position works closely with staff, clients, and manager to ensure broad representation and participation in grant activities.


Examples of Work Performed:

Provides relevant, competent cultural support services to community members, staff, and participants of YNBHS program who either request or are require services.

Advise on cultural issues, best practices, and sensitivities relevant to the organization's mission.

Provide insights to leadership on cultural trends and community needs.

Ensures cultural support services are delivered with excellence and conform to Yakama Nation's philosophy, policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols as well as grant requirements.

Ensures every child and family receives the highest quality of cultural support services through shared decision-making that is done in the best interests and well-being of every child and family for the enhancement and development of positive cultural identity.

Work collaboratively with the Yakama Nation's Cultural Resources program to ensure a consistently unified and culturally appropriate program development and sensitive services are implemented in service delivery of project planning.

Recruits Elders, Traditional Advisors and Healers for the provision of culturally appropriate healing practices for participant and agency well-being.

Plans, organize and coordinate cultural workshops, programming and activities, teachings, ceremonies and healing practices for participants and agency staff as required.

Design and deliver training programs to enhance cultural awareness and competency among staff.

Complete relevant agency records, forms and documents as required.

Attends and participates as a team member in staffing's, meetings, and training sessions.

Reviews policies to identify change that will improve the quality of services and will ensure provision of culturally appropriate services to meet grant requirements.

Engages in effective communication with Advisory Boards and staff to ensure adequate coordination of cultural services and attainment of agency cultural and service objectives.

Acts as a resource and provides resources to ensure that cultural knowledge and practices are maintained within the agency.

Ensures that participants are aware of the cultural resources available to maintain their cultural identity and practices.

Lead or participate in traditional or spiritual practices for meeting or cultural activities as required.

Educate and counsel staff of cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and competencies.

Establishes and maintains purposeful relationships with community service providers and tribal agencies.

Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of Yakama language, culture, traditions, ceremonies, principles, and values.

Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.

Ability to communicate in Yakama language and interpret language.

Knowledge of Indian Child Welfare Act, Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010, The American Indian Religious Freedom Act of 1978 (AIRFA), Savanna's Act, and familiar with Tribal Sovereignty.


Knowledge of service development and delivery; the communities and family structure, and ability to

incorporate Yakama customs and traditions to these structures.

Knowledge and understanding of personal commitment to the Yakama way of life.

Ability to guide and support Yakama people in their desires and efforts to embrace the Yakama way of life and healthy traditional healing methods.

Knowledge, skills, and ability to help Yakama children and families by providing services in ways that respect Yakama culture and spiritual practices.

Ability to provide services in the Yakama context of extended family and community involvement.

Ability to influence and facilitate community and group decision-making processes through knowledge, ideas, and persuasion.


Minimum Requirements:

Ability to maintain confidentially. (Required)

Must pass a pre-employment background check.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.


Preferred Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree preferred and/or minimum of associate degree related to Social Services; at least 2 years minimum experience as a Cultural Specialists, Cultural Liaison, and/or Traditional Participant

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
