Fish Biologist III

Fisheries Resource Management (FRM)

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $29.70/Regular/Full-time/Supervisory

Location: Toppenish


Responsible to direct the implementation of multiple on-reservation watershed projects; additional responsibilities include assisting with the development and implementation of both on and off-reservation resource management policy, solicitation and management of project funding and coordination with Yakama Nation programs and non-tribal agencies.


Examples of Work Performed:

Oversee preparation and submittal of funding proposals to federal, state, and private organizations.

Develop contracts with funding agencies.

Manage and integrate multiple project accounts.

Direct restoration, monitoring and research activities within project boundaries and assists with other YN projects.

Assures that project activities are consistent with tribal and federal policies and regulations.

Develop management agreements with funding and regulatory agencies (e.g., National Marine Fisheries Service, Bonneville Power Administration, etc.).

Provide policy assistance for tribal, state, and federal funding, management, and regulatory agencies.

Coordinate and oversee management activities performed on-reservation by non-tribal agencies (e.g., WSDOT highway construction, BPA power line corridor maintenance).

Provide technical assistance to BIA tribal leadership and DNR staff.

Assure that project goals and timelines are met.

Conduct research on relevant natural resource management issues.

Present research and monitoring findings in professional forums including BPA provincial reviews, technical society meetings, etc.

Develop and conduct educational seminars for public schools, agencies, conservation organizations and agricultural producers.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the life histories and ecology of Columbia Basin anadromous fish stocks.

Knowledge of anadromous fish habitat and populations sampling techniques (e.g., TFW sampling protocols, screw trapping, spawner ground surveys, electroshocking etc.).

Knowledge of federal natural resource management policies (e.g., Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Code of Federal Regulations, etc.).

Knowledge of the funding and contracting policies / procedures of external funding agencies including Bonneville Power Administration, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Public Power Council, Washington State Department of Transportation, Administration for native Americans, etc.

Knowledge of the Yakama Reservation Closed Area.

Knowledge of the Yakama nation administrative policies and procedures.

Knowledge of federal natural resource management law.

Knowledge of Yakama Nation natural resource management and administrative policies.

Ability to demonstrate the capacity to manage all facets of field-based restoration, research, and monitoring projects.

Ability to supervise and coordinate a large staff comprised of professionals and technicians.

Ability to implement and coordinate a diverse array of field activities.

Ability to develop, fund and implement projects.

Ability to coordinate on-reservation watershed projects with other YN or external fish recovery efforts.

Ability to coordinate projects with all YN and BIA natural resource management activities.

Ability to incorporate new technologies and procedures to better meet project objectives and integrate with both YN and external databases.


Ability to develop and deliver presentations and educational seminars to funding entities, professional

organizations, public schools, and agricultural producers.


Minimum Requirements:

A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Fisheries Science, or related field.

Two years experience as a Fish Biologist 1.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving Permit.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.


Preferred Requirements:

A Master of Science degree in Fisheries Science or related field may substitute for up to two years of experience.
