Hourly Wage: $46.10-$51.88/Regular/Full-Time


The Yakama Tribal School Principal shall be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective school leadership to enable success for all. As an administrative team leader, the Principal will be highly visible, work toward success for all, be an active listener, and promote a caring, supportive, healthy and safe learning environment. The Principal must also value staff input, maintain high performance standards, know effective instructional practices, be visible in classrooms, work collaboratively to solve problems and encourage effective communication in the school and its communities.


Examples of Work Performed:

Coordinate activities of the teaching staff for the Yakama Nation Tribal School. Conducts staff meetings.

Develops course descriptions and outlines for academic and elective course offerings.

Develops and implements units in subject area via written lesson plans and ensuring that other staff is developing daily lesson plans.

Order classroom supplies/materials and equipment following school procedures.

Manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the school consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, and goals of the school including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, and discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly climate, building maintenance, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures.

Work as part of a team with other staff members in developing and implementing curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and supplemental programs, creating accountability with planning and instruction.

Coordinate and oversee Chapter 1, Gifted and Talented, Special Education and monitors school progress identified goals and objectives.

Participate in and coordinate team meetings designed to determine placement, diagnostic status, and development of Individualized Education Plan (IEP's) and to ensure compliance with all applicable laws.

Administrate student achievement tests on a pre-post basis and monitor student progress in courses, provides assessment of progress and prepared quarterly grade reports.

Oversee student attendance (creates programs to increase student attendance, work closely with school staff on things they can do to increase student attendance).

Lead the Tribal School in aligning curriculums with state and national standards.

Lead the Tribal School to consensus on discipline policy and procedures.

Strengthen and build upon existing relationships with parents, community, and Tribal entities.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of the most current teaching methods, techniques, and practices.

Knowledge of curriculum development and writing of instructional objectives.

Knowledge of areas needing in-service training and ensuring that all content areas are covered.

Skill to provide counseling to students/parents including follow-up for referrals.

Skills necessary to handle the care/inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials assigned to classrooms.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to supervise and evaluate students and staff.

Ability to evaluate transcripts, develops schedules, and assesses progress towards school goals and objectives.

Ability to interpret and implement the Yakama Nation Tribal School Board policies.

Ability to develop and supervise extra-curricular activities.

Ability to coordinate other teaching staff, support staff or parents for improvement of services to students.

Ability to conduct/coordinate parent conference to share student progress.

Ability to integrate tribal customs and teachings in presenting a variety of learning objectives and teaching methods.

Ability to maintain standards of professionalism and confidentiality in dress, appearance, attitude, and presentation.


Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.

Ability to set an example of an exceptional professional educator for all students and staff to model.

Ability to maintain visibility with students, teachers, and parents.


Minimum Requirements:

Requires a Master's Degree in Education or equivalent, a minimum of two years Supervision experience or one-year management experience.

Must possess a proper Principal certification as established by state law and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Washington State Teaching Certificate and successful teaching experience at any level required (three years of experience).

Hold or be eligible for appropriate Washington State Administrative Certificate.

Must possess a current First Aid/CPR card.

Must have no history or child abuse or neglect.

Must have no history of drug or alcohol abuse.

Ability to complete background check according to Yakama Nation Tribal School and BIE requirements.

Required to pass pre-employment background check.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.


Preferred Requirements:

Leadership experience at the high school level preferred.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
