Salary Pay Range: $24.60-$31.84
Essential Functions:
- Performs the collection, processing and preparation of blood, body fluids, and other laboratory samples for testing and analysis.
- Greets patients and prepares them for phlebotomy and/or specimen collection.
- Obtains basic information pertinent to laboratory/radiology testing. Ensures records contain current patient demographic information. Directs patients to patient registration for updating information as needed.
- Provides appropriate collection kit(s) and instructs the patient in proper specimen collection.
- Performs Newborn Screening collections per protocol.
- Performs routine analysis, quality control, and preventative maintenance on assigned tests.
- Enters and approves results in the Laboratory Information System in a timely manner.
- Performs urine drug screen collections according to lab protocol, policy and procedures.
- Performs DNA collection and shipment process, maintaining chain of custody.
- Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with providers, patients, patient families, visitors, co-workers, administrative staff, and other employees in a professional and confidential manner.
- Maintains laboratory inventory, ordering and stocking of supplies.
- Ensure that purchase orders and invoices are processed through Abila in a timely manner.
- Provides clerical support for laboratory/radiology staff.
- Prepares correspondence, copying, faxing, communicable disease reporting, and accurate routing of telephone messages. Accurately completes chart documentation, computer entry, billing, coding, and other necessary forms.
- Demonstrates and maintains competency in phlebotomy skills (venous and capillary) for adult, neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients.
- Demonstrates and maintains competency in all procedures in accordance with institutional polices.
- Obeys institutional policies and procedures regarding patient care, with special attention to biohazard procedures.
- Ensures that lab test reports, computer generated reports and other information produced are legible, accurate, and delivered in a timely manner.
- Adheres to the laboratory’s quality control policies and documents all quality control activities as necessary.
- Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and corrects the problem or immediately notifies supervisor.
- Ensures Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) compliance in record keeping.
- Serves both eligible and non-eligible beneficiaries in an outreach capacity both on and off site.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Completion of an accredited phlebotomy program OR adequate draw/work experience creating eligibility to sit for a nationally recognized certification exam required.
- Minimum of one (1) year of phlebotomy experience or successful completion of a phlebotomy school program.
- Experience with Laboratory Information System (LIS) and/or Electronic Health Record (EHR) software preferred.
- OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Driving Requirements:
- This position may require driving.
Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:
- Certification as a Phlebotomist, Lab Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Certified Nursing Assistant preferred.
- Requires current CPR/First Aid Certificate.
- Requires excellent customer relation skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology and excellent computer and data entry abilities required.
- Requires the ability to maintain composure in stressful situation.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:
- Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
- Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
- Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
- Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
- The workload varies sporadically from heavy to moderate, with sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction and stress.
- Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazardous body fluids, toxic chemicals and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
- Hazardous working conditions in which individual is exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentation, chemicals, and/or body fluids.
- Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
- This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions, which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions.
- May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
- Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
